88 IROC with 15" wheels question
Okay, so this 88 IROC fell into my lap and now I am fixing it for my wife to drive.
I know; it was purchased as a parts car but when I saw it, it was too nice to cut it up.
So its got the 15" Z28 wheels, which looks correct enough since it could have come that way in 88 only, according to everything I read on this website. My question is about lug nuts and center caps. I'm a Firebird guy mostly, so I don't know much about these wheels the way they are set up. It looks like the center caps just snap through the center like the Firebird wheels, I can buy the IROC-Z center sticker emblems from Hawk's for the 88 15" wheels, no problem there. What about the lug nuts? are they the same as the Firebird parts with the little plastic caps? The wheels are gold, so do the caps and lug nut covers go black, or should I paint them to match the wheels? I can't really find any answers for this part of my repairs.
Also, I never noticed until now (now that I have a set of 15" Z28 rims, anyway) that the area in the middle of the wheel is machined around the lug nut area. Is there some other kind of center cap that fits in there or do you just leave it painted and install the lugs and lug caps?
Thanks for the help guys!

Any help out there? I'd really like to know about this machined area all around the lug nut holes.

Re: 88 IROC with 15" wheels question
I think you would be looking for a set of those big black plastic caps that completely hide the hub of the wheel. The ones that say "IROC-Z" on them. But then, my 88 came to me with the 16" rims (and a dozen lug nuts missing
) even though the RPO lists the 15's...

You wouldn't happen to have a picture of that center cap, would you?
All the pictures i keep finding are just the smaller ones that snap into the hole.

Re: 88 IROC with 15" wheels question
These are for stock 1982 to 1992 Camaro wheels http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-1982-199...03cd08&vxp=mtr
Also the stock lugs came threaded on the outside to add the lug nut caps
The stock lug nuts looked like this = http://www.ebay.com/itm/DORMAN-611-1...2b0a3e&vxp=mtr
The wheel caps look like this = http://www.1aauto.com/1A/LugNut/Chev...HK00003/328834
Do not paint caps or lug nut caps.

Re: 88 IROC with 15" wheels question
Okay then, so I have plenty of the lug nuts, those are the extra firebird ones that I have too. the Black caps should match the black center caps.
So I guess you just leave that machined center section alone? I see some of them are painted black to match the centers and some are not. It just looks weird to have the wheels machined for some sort of thing to go there and then to just leave it open.

Re: 88 IROC with 15" wheels question
The wheel is machined out and it LOOKS like something like this would fit it better:

Re: 88 IROC with 15" wheels question
yep, that's what they look like.
In that close up, it looks like I can run with center caps and black lug caps and be good.

Re: 88 IROC with 15" wheels question
15" IROC wheels look just like 16" IROC wheels, only smaller. The Z28 wheels are different (of course you may already know this).

Re: 88 IROC with 15" wheels question
not for 1988
for 88 only, the old 15 inch wheels were the standard, but fully painted one color with no aluminum showing. for 89 they started the mini 16" IROC wheels

Just to give you heads up, the after market break and crack very easy. You will pay about $60 bucks for set and 1 will break within a year. and you can get black lug covers cheep that screw on. If you can find some OEM that would be better. Even if its one at a time. You can get the center that say camaro, iroc, Z28, chevy. On ebay.
