It's not a pro quality job, but they look a lot better. Mothers on the aluminum rim and a couple coats of gloss on the laces. I'm satisfied for now. It took 6-7 hours do do all 4 wheels. The only question now is black or chrome center caps? The chrome looks flashier and photographs well, but I think the black look better IMO. Chrome center caps look too busy on a t-top car to me. I changed the lugs out to chrome too. My favorite combo is the chrome lugs and black caps.

Re: My wheel dress up project
I having a HECK of a time getting pics to upload here lately. The poor quality is due to the fact that I had to make them almost of a non-existent size to get them to upload, and even as tiny files it will not let me attach more than one per post.

Those look good. I would personally put black caps with black lugs to not take away from the lip but I agree with chrome center caps being to busy. How well where you able to get coverage on the spokes? I will be painting my cross laces soon and am expecting a pita of a job to get complete coverage without any problems.

I got good coverage. You have to keep turning the wheel so that different sides hit the angle of the sun, but you can do it. Just when you think you've got it, you turn it again and find spots you missed. And BTW, always leave the wheel laying flat, it keeps the paint from running! The trickiest part was keeping the black off the aluminum. To get around that I used masking tape, and taped OVER the border between the two, then used an exacto knife to cut around the outside edge of the laces, then pulled off what was on the black part, leaving the aluminum covered in tape. Kind of a "reverse mask" I guess. There may be better ways, but that's what occurred to me at the time. It's not professional perfect, but it got the job done. You can always go in and touch up/detail afterwards. Also, I learned to do the Mothers before I painted, because if you don't it's almost impossible to keep the rag from brushing up against your new paint and dulling it.

Re: My wheel dress up project
Oh, and it's super important to try and make sure you clean all the brake dust and etc. off. I did my best, but still worry that the paint will start chipping in six months because I didn't clean it good enough.....there are five different shapes/sizes within the laces. I'm going to work on cutting out pieces of foam rubber that fit each size to make it easier to clean them. Now that they're painted, washing the car and wheels just got a lot more complicated. If I have to continually rub a rag in there, it will eventually dull the paint. But if I have a cleaning tool that matches the size of the opening, it might be easier?

I'm wanting to paint my cross lace rims too. My problem is I can't figure out how to clean them really good to paint them. I've tried a bottle brush and that really didn't do anything. Mine are really dirty in between those spokes too. I'm also afraid the paint won't stick if I can't clean them good and that's why I haven't done it yet.

Re: My wheel dress up project
I used Armor all wheel cleaner and a toothbrush. Then I sprayed it with the hose and wiped it off with a wet rag and scrubbed it the best I could. It's a crap shoot. I'd say clean it the best you can and give it a shot--that is if you don't want to spend hundreds having it done professionally. If you screw it up you can always strip it and try again, or send it out to be done--which is the option you have right now before you did anything. So no loss there. One thing that works in my favor is the fact that I have two other cars, and my Formula will never see a wet or salty street if I can help it!

Re: My wheel dress up project
Look good! I am changing the color of the GTA wheel I got a hold of. They are gold, not sure if I am going to go black, gunmetal, or silver. I am going to have my spokes and the whole wheel (Except the polished lip) powdercoated. I have already stripped the clear coat off.

Go with black center caps, I am going with black with silver WS6 lettering)

Re: My wheel dress up project
That the car you're doing it to? The red one pictured? Or another? That looks like the one I had about 19 years ago, except mine was a 91. When I found my current one, it was the only one similar to mine I have seen since. Anyway, let me know what it cost to get the powder coating and etc done. If my paint doesn't hold up well, I may try that when money isn't as tight. For now they are holding up just fine, it helps that I never drive it in the rain. I had thoughts of going to the Formula wheels until I found out that in 92 in order to get the t top with the 350, you had to choose GTA's. So now it's a cool originality thing, and the more I look at them, the more I think they are the perfect look for my car.

A good pressure washer with a water heater built in possibly ? They get pretty darn hot ... Or a small sandblaster/ dry ice / walnut shells etc ...

Re: My wheel dress up project
Yep, they are going on my '88 Formula 350. I like the Formula wheels but I like the GTA more, plus my stock wheels needs stripped and polished. There is a guy here in town that does powder coating and IIRC will do a wheel for $40.He does the entire wheel and not just the outer part and can do multiple color at extra cost.

Holy crap is that all? That's a great deal. For that price I'd have skipped my own paint job completely and farmed it out! LOL
