T-Top Weather Strip Catching on Window

Hi. Does anyone else have this problem? The outer edge of my t-top weather stripping is catching on the glass from the door when I close it. It may be due to slight chassis twisting over the years. It does this both on the left and right sides, except on the left side it catches on the rear edge and on the right on the front edge.

My workaround when I close the door from the outside is to, while closing the door, use my other hand to push on the top glass edge which makes it duck under the weather stripping. And when I close door from the inside, I roll the window down slightly before close it and then right back up.

Does anybody know if there is a permanent fix for this? I've considered replacing the weather stripping but I'm not sure it will help.

Any comments much appreciated. Thanks!

I have this problem too. I was going to try some of that window weather stripping glue.

Re: T-Top Weather Strip Catching on Window

Is that a C&C t-top car? (non-factory t tops?)Looks like it.

I can't say I've every had that issue before, although to be completely honest I can't recall ever having the windows totally up and closing the doors. I usually leave them both cracked about 1/2 inch to make it easier to close.

In the picture it looks like your window isn't lined up properly, is there a chance that it's getting moved up at an angle? (i.e. the track in the door has slipped causing the rear to be pushed up?)

Yes, these are factory t-tops. Yes, it's possible the windows go up in a slight angle, but then at the top they should even out - I think. But if you have yours cracked down 1/2" and leave it out when it rains, doesn't water get in?

Thanks, but the link doens't work. Do you think the glue will raise the stripping slightly? I think that's what I need. Or possibly trim it, but it's risky cause it might end up looking bad, or cause it to leak, which will be a bigger problem.

I thought I fixed the link. It was working for me. It's just like 3m weather stripping glue. Mine has a slight tear on the passenger side rear corner that makes the seal sag a bit. I guess it's a little different than your issue.

I actually have a tear on the passenger side too, towards the front. I'll try the stripping glue. Thanks!

Ok. In theory water could get in, but they aren't down past the "footprint" of what the overhang of the strip would cover. I try to not be out in it when it's raining or going to rain. It's not my daily driver, so far I can count on 1 hand the amount of times it's seen rain, haha.

Yw. Hope it works. I just got my Camaro so it's further down on my list, let us know if it works. Plus it hardly ever rains here. 300+ days of sun.

Re: T-Top Weather Strip Catching on Window

Yep...mine does that a little on the passenger side. The little rain deflector piece is pulling out, and hangs down in the path of the glass as the door is closing. I either have to hold it as you described, or roll the window down a crack as I close the door, then back up. Otherwise it seals well.

Re: T-Top Weather Strip Catching on Window

The glass needs to be adjusted inward. To do this you will need to remove the door panel.I don't have a illustration of the regulator, but if someone could post one.I can point to where the adjustment needs to be done. Its basically two bolts on the rearward upright guide.

It also would'nt hurt to take a heat gun & bend that rubber piece back.Since it might have given some from the glass catching it.With any luck this could possible fix it, if it doesn't bend back again!

You can fix tears in the weatherstrip w/ blk silicone.A small piece of foam inside the weather strip directly behind the tear helps support the repair.Insert foam & apply silicone, remove excess silicone. After this, apply some masking tape over the repair.Apply the tape to follow the contour of the weatherstrip. The tape hold the shape inplace til the silicone cures.Afterwards remove the tape (it wont stick) & the silicone should resemble the original shape.I did this on my s10 & it works very well.

Re: T-Top Weather Strip Catching on Window

It's likely not the window glass adjustment... The weatherstrip in the t-top itself is coming down from the metal frame. You can probably press up on it to push it back in slightly.

Mine started doing that, but after adjusting it, has been fine for about a year since...

That's what's happening with mine, Stuart. You can see the extra adhesive where someone has tried to repair this in the past. It's something I hope to replace this winter.

Replace those rubber parts with the hard plastic parts from 90-92(?) cars.

Same issue, but mine was ever so slight...

Best cropped pic I could find without going and taking a picture of the car, but it all lines up nicely ever since...

That pic above from Dyno Dave is not a previous repair. That's how the strip is held in place from the factory. The factory goo has gotten hot and the strip has slid down some. Take the TTops apart and move the strip back into place and secure it with new adhesive or buy new ones like was mentioned before.

Thanks Scott. It had that "Second line B-tech packed it full of dum dum and crossed his fingers it won't be a comeback" look to it.

I had hoped to try and save the original Vs. replacing it, if possible.
