Abrasives on Clearcoat?

I just read an article that you shouldn't use any kind of compound (like Rubbing or polishing) on Clearcoat. This may be a stupid question but I know A LOT of people who do this. What do you all think?

Also, Does my 84 bird SE have clearcoat? I'm not sure if this is a dumb question or not. Thanks.

Your 84 bird does not have clear coat unless it has been repainted. Does the article you read tell you why not to use the abrasives on clear coat?
