Remove rust from rear axle housing?

While I have the rear dropped, what can I do to remove the rust. Car is a play toy and not a show car, and I'm not looking for perfection. pics:

Wire wheel and white vinegar, or muriatic acid.

I've got a bottle of muratic acid that use for the swimming pool. Does it remove rust? Maybe brush it on with an old paint brush, then wire wheel everything off?
