Almost bought an IROC today
Almost bought an IROC today
Saw an IROC sitting along the road today. I didn't expect it to be all that great, considering the location. I stopped to look at it when this older gentleman came over. He opened it up, started it and popped the hood. I couldn't believe how quick it fired up and how nice it ran. Then he told me, it only has 21,163 miles on it. Looking under the hood, it is immaculate; not a spec of dirt. There's not a scratch or dent anywhere, and the interior still smells new.The specifics:'87 IROC, Gray cloth interior, full power, 5.0, auto, T-tops, all original. He said I could have it for $15,000. I'm sure I can get him lower, but it's only a 5.0, and I'd rather have black. It sure is nice though.
Re: Almost bought an IROC today
We called and made him an offer. He said he will give it until the end of the week to see if he gets any other bites. If we get it, we have a buyer. Should be an easy flip.
Re: Almost bought an IROC today
I see you have a 21,000 mile car. If I get a chance, I'll try to get some pics. I've never seen such a low mileage thirdgen in person. It would be nice to keep it, but we would want to do some upgrading. That would ruin the originality on such a nice specimen. Being unmolested is the appeal of this car.

What color is it???
I have a feeling that once you own the car.....you'll want to keep it and not touch a thing. When I bought mine, it about made me sick to my stomach to replace the original tires lol. And I've been offered $9,000 more than I paid for the car........and I turned it down

The 5.0 / 5.7 thing is kinda silly.. in the stock form they aren’t really that different.. also if you look at the prices, if you have a low mile TPI car the engine size doesn’t do too much for the price.. people are paying top dollar for mint LB9.
The price sounds pretty good considering the little info you’ve given..
A car that fits those stats could be seen anywhere from $19k-$24k these days..
Would love to see pics!

I agree with the 5.0/5.7 thing. I've owned several of each and have had them at the local 1/8th mile dragstrip. Believe it or not, my old 92 Z28 with a tpi 305 and 5 speed was 2 tenths of a second quicker and 4mph faster at the track than my old 87 IROC-Z with the 5.7 TPI. The 5.7 car also had a hypertech chip, airfoil, 160 degree thermostat, gutted cat and a few other bolt on mods. The 305 car was stock.......and quicker. The 5.7 car had 48k miles.....the 5.0 car had 80k miles. TRUE STORY

We were neck and neck when both stock.. whoever launched better would win.
Even my 85 auto didn’t “feel” slower, but in a race you’d notice the difference.
The 305 TPI is torquey and fun.. and a new Camaro will blow your damn doors off anyway so who cares if you lose by a car length to a 5.7 IROC..
Stock Thirdgens aren’t fast anyway.. they are FUN!

Re: Almost bought an IROC today
I had an 88 GTA with 28k miles with the 5.0 TPI, auto, and a 100hp NOS kit. The car ran 3 tenths slower than the 5.7 car without nitrous.....and almost 1 second quicker with the juice.
You said it right.....we drive them because they are fun. We are enthusiasts, and we LOVE them. If I wanted a faster car, I would certainly own one. I've had numerous fast cars....but these are what I truly WANT. Something about a super clean third gen will stop me in my tracks every time....and I'd walk right past the new ZL1 that was sitting next to it lol

It's white with gray graphics and interior. It also has the rear louvers. It's not about the 5.7 being faster or having more HP. I had an '87 IROC that had the 5.0 HO/auto, and it was plenty fast for what it was.I agree, these things, in any stock configuration, are not fast by any standards.

I've never been a fan of the rear louvers. Rip those off, but buy the car. That's a good deal.
