A couple weeks ago, I reached out to the guy that bought my white, 45k mile, 1990, G92, 5 speed IROC-Z. I hadn't heard from him since November, and the last time we texted, he had bought an LS crate engine (LS7, I believe, but I could be wrong), transmission, full DSE suspension, 9 bolt rear end, subframe connectors, etc. Anyways, I sent him a text asking how the car was coming along, and was absolutely shocked when he replied. When he was installing the SFC's, the inside of the car caught on fire with it up on a lift. And, the car was severely damaged from the fire. I feel absolutely terrible for the guy....he's such a nice dude and was really going to build an absolutely killer car out of it. He did have it insured good, and he bought it back from the insurance company. He replaced it with a 24k mile, 1989 IROC-Z that he is currently doing that build to. Anyways, here's the pics...
Sad indeed, although if the guy was going to rip the car apart and modify, why the heck start with such a nice low mileage examples?? Guess it's his cars and if he wants to burn it to the ground that is his prerogative.

I guess I get why he wants to use low mile, original cars. In the end he has zero bodywork, zero paint work, zero rust issues, etc. I could never afford to do it that way, but if I could...hell I'd honestly probably do the same thing.

Was To Nice Of A Car To Modify He Should Have Left It Stock
My car caught on fire while the shop was installing the SFCs. A fuel line was leaking vapor only so no one could tell. I had never smelled gas in the car. It had been sitting for 8 years until about 6 months before. Luckily they got it out immediately since they keep an extinguisher by the welding cart at all times. They replaced the fuel line.
That Ding Dong should have left that nice A$$ car alone! Build an LS hotrod out of an old worn out base car! This car was awesome just like it was. Bad deal
I wonder what his plans are if he bought it back from the insurance ?
Sad to see such a nice car destroyed, and to hear that another low mileage example is getting modified in it's place.
It's his property and money, and I understand the sentiment about starting with the cleanest example available. But it still makes me sad to see when there are so many slightly run down examples that could be used in place of the surviving all original cars instead.

He said he was unsure what he was gonna do with it. I told him I may be interested in buying it back if he chooses to sell it. He said he'd call me first if he did decide to part with it. The only bad thing is he is in Ohio....that's a helluva drive from here to go after a torched car. It COULD be saved....but you'd need a super nice, complete wrecked car for a donor. This isn't exactly a car you'd want to piece together one part at a time.

It would require that wrecked, low miles '88 IROC you posted recently.
