If you've got flash 5 just change one of the output parameters to make an animated gif file. As long as it isn't a huge animation with lots of detail it should be all good.

Your problem might be in the size of the file. It can only be a MAX of 20000 bytes or 20kb. I had to shorten mine for that reason. Once you upload the gif file, it will play automatically under your user name.

does anyone use web hosting for pix anymore? IF so where, eg. webshots, geocity, anglefire......????

You're just attaching the image, you have to actually put it in your avatar using the options in the User CP section.
EDIT: And BTW, "test posts" are no longer necessary. Once you update it, the board updates the avatar and/or sig on all your old posts.. so just come back to a post you made and check it out.

but homestead.com will let you do that
