This paint scheme, how do you think it will look?
Im planning on painting my 84 Trans Am in the next few weeks, and was wondering what you guys think of my paint scheme.
I'm planning on painting the car lacquer black, buffing the hell out of it, then putting two silver IROC style stripes on it in metallic silver. Start near base of hood, get a little wider, then stay that width and go all the way back. Car will have cowl bolted on, but it will be functional with a high rise manifold and velocity stack bringing the air cleaner right up in the cowl. Not a big fan of the cowl induction look, but the extra horsepower and uniqueness of cowl induction is cool.
As for trans am stickers, I'm thinking red ones. Im gonna leave the birds off, but I think red trans am badges on a black car would look sweet.
I have the hooker system with the two chrome 3" dual tips. I have 14" cragar S/S, but one is shot. I'm thinking new rims when money allows it.
Thanks.

I think it would look alright. I'd change just two things though, if it were me: 1) I'd use base/clear rather than lacquer; it looks better and lasts longer 2) I would only put the stripes on the hood and rear deck, leaving them off the roof of the car.
New rims: good idea.

sounds good to me all except the read stickers, they wouldnt seem to match anything
Turns out I cant get ahold of red stickers anyway. I may just end up forking over the $22 apiece they want for silver decals. Or I could try to stencil them on but if I make a mistake im up a creek.
It has to be in lacquer, as my father is painting the car himself. He has only painted a half dozen cars before, and works with lacquer in case he makes a mistake. His 67 camaro (454 .030 over, holy crap that thing hauls) he painted himself with lacquer and then cleared, and it looks great. As for stripes on the roof, I never even thought of that. Aside from the sheer difficulty of painting them, I'm curious as to how it looks either way. Anyone got pics of stripes one way or the other? Thanks.

I didn't think you could purchase acrylic lacquer paint anymore? Or are you out of an EPA controlled area? Basecoat/clearcoat is soooo easy to use, and lasts much better than lacquer, you do need a respirator for isocynates though.

The nearest PPG store to me has gallons of lacquer black paint. But they said that's the only color they will sell. So I guess if you had someone to spray it... it'd work?

If he cleared over the laquer anyway, then why not use base clear to begin with? It is actually very easy to use and even to fix. The base coat goes on as easy as primer and then you just shoot the clear 20 minutes after the base. I f, for some reason you mess up on the clear then it can be fixed just like the laquer, just wait at least 12 hours before doing it. Laquer looks great, but it is just horrible on durability and you will be much much happier with the base clear job.

That sounds coo but what you should do is photchop it and see what It looks like. That will give you something to do with the time you spend untill you paint the real car.
