Best way to clean engine bay?

I'm replacing a motor and have the engine out with all the wires labeled. I want to clean up the engine bay, cross member, fender wells, etc.

It's not really that bad and I was thinking Simple green and a couple cans of degreaser would break up any crud. I'm afraid to spray water around all those connectors.

Any suggestions or experiences?

I don't want to chase electrical bugs on a new motor install.

I used lots of simple green, a bunch of scrub pads, sand paper, scrub brushes you name it.

Sorry for the bad pics

I was told to use liquid laundry detergent by Vader. Works well. I also use engine bright.

Yeah, I'm getting ready to POR 15 mine when I get my headers. I'd go with that after cleaning it with some simple green and engine brite. Don't forget to use those little tubes that keep wires togeather, tire shine for rubber hoses, and polishing aluminum and chrome.

Here's mine:

Forgive my ignorance but what is this Por15'd.

I like the look of the steering parts on Karps TA picture.

Did you remove the box to paint it? What did you use on the arms and sway bar?

Speaking of polishing. I was doing some cleanup of the water neck and air pump pully and was thinking of polishing and chroming these parts.

Polishing the water neck isn't too hard. I just need a polishing wheel and??? What's that polishing stuf called?

Is it bad to have the air pump pully chromed?

POR15 is a special paint that hardens over rust in a ceramic-like layer, that gets harder when it gets wet. It stops and prevents rust from spreading. You can look at it online at POR15.com .

Chroming pullies sounds like a good idea, I need to do something with mine.

I have a set of March underdrive polished pulleys but the air con and air pump pulleys are stock. I don't know what to do about the air con but I think I can do something about the air pump.

The front brackets are al. and can be polished too but what a job that would be.

Thanks for the link:hail:

I used POR 15 engine enamel on the steering box and all the suspension. It matches my engine. I wanted to have the swaybars and stuff powderocated but after getting quotes from the people near me I thought they were smoking crack. The POR15 engine paint is so thick the parts almost feel powder coated. We'll see how well it lasts.
