Tail light center bird mod complete!
OK... here it is. I'm finally done with this thing. Was done a while ago, but some jackball smashed a pumpkin on my car and hit right on the center. Luckly it didn't break it, but it did however flex enough to crack the paint inside so it chipped off. After repainting it, it's done.
Let me know what ya think of it.

Dood, how the hell did you do that??? That rocks!!!
I have the 91/92 style, and I would like to make the Pontiac light up. But I guess the older style would be easier cause you can just cut out the backing behind the bird, make a clear plexiglass bird to put in it, paint it, and there ya go.:hail:

It's pretty simple unless you have no concept of patience. or acuracy. It is a pretty meticulous thing to do. There are a few ways it could be done. I'll cover the quick/easy and my way.
Actually. I'm thinking of writing up a tech article on how to do this. I'll post it on my website for ya guys. I should have it done end of next week at the lastest. It's practically a free mod that can be done. So until then, you'll just have to wait.

I like it a lot. Looks really sharp. If I had a Bird, I'd do that for sure. Nice work.

You don't ruin the tail lights, you would only ruin the center piece. I'm sure you can get another for cheap.
So don't do it wrong!!

Badass mod!! There's a guy on the gta board that's doing a mod to make the P-O-N-T-I-A-C light up in the 91-92 style lights. Now all someone has to do is come out w/a tech article on the T/A center bird then we'll all be covered!
I've got a 91. So all your doing is removing the black and beneath it it is clear, right? So othere than not having any insignia on the back how could you really mess this up. Can't you just repaint it black and surely there's something else you could put there to replace the emblem, if it's not coming out allright? Just curious as to what the risks are with doing this on a 91-92.
Thanx

Well, If I ever decide to do my 92 lights, Im only gonna do one side at a time, incase I mess it up, Ill only have to buy one. The big risk is that IF you mess up, theyre expensive to replace. With the older style lights, all ya need is a new center and your set.
Looks good! I have actually thought about doing that to my 91 when I was replacing my bulbs in my tail lights. I was thinkin, hmmmmmm sure would be cool if I could light this little red bird up. So now that I see something simialar to it done,I want to do it myself! I believe I will use a different type of light source(christmas lights seem to give off a inconsistant amount of light to me) The mod looks real good though, congrats!

i did this a while back.. i was cleaning out my tail lights and scratched the center peice with the silver brid and saw that it was just paint in the back.. so i sanded it off with 000 steel wool t'll it was clear.. made a template for FORMULA and two little birdies.. put the formula at the bottom (where PONTIAC) is and the birds beside the key thing.. spray painted it a few times (after making sure the birds and formula were flush up against it.. good two sided tape worked well) and made sure that it was spray painted well. (did i mention this) as to not have any light come out of the black.. (as it would take away from the crispness of the birds and lettering).. so in anycase.. i stuck blue bulbs in it.. matched my car's color.. and.. what do you know?.. if it's not part of u'r tail lights and it's not for illuminating u'r license plate.. it's illegal (where i am anyways).. so i wired it to my break lights and stuck a red bulb in there (i have 4 bulbs, one in each corner for proper illumination) and the cop didn't have a problem with that cuz it's part of my breaks now.. went to show him that.. afterwards.. he thought it was cool.. and also noticed that i didn't have my license plate in the front..
you can never win.. do something their way and they keep pushing for it to be totally legal... that just ain't fun!

oh yeah.. you people with the newer birds (91 and 92, i do belive) have that thrid break light on th top of the hatch on the inside.. (a square peice, i belive.. i havn't looked at my friends' car that well) anyways.. he took it off and masked off some parts so that's it's a pontiac sign (that V type thing).. look sweet when he breaks..

Im gonna try some paint remover. Just cant leave it on long, as that crap eats plastics. I just need to get the pontiac decal that should normally be there... if it is a decal. I dont feel like masking off all 7 letters of pontiac perfectly lol

Just a thought about lighting that area up... instead of using x-mas lights, theres this stuff called EL sheets. (Electroluminescent Sheets) You can get an inverter to run off a 12 volt source to light it up. Just thought I'd throw that idea out on the table

I thought about those sheets and decided that you could buy a lifetime supply of Christmas Lights for the $100 it would cost to light that with the sheet. I think I'll just stick with what I have.
I know you didn't say I should change, I'm just saying that I was going for free lighting since our dog chewed up that string of lights already. It was either car modification, or trash.
