changing interior color

Ok I have an 87 z-28 and it has what i beleive is a med dark grey interior and i was thinking of just changing pretty much everything to black,i just wanted to get some opinions basically everything will be black except where my door panels have grey on the top,and bottom, also behind the rear seat i am gonna leave all those panels grey, and my seats need to be reapolstured so i was gonna get a seat kit that was black with grey in the middle,if they even make those, let me know what you guys think, thanx

here's what I think... I had an 83 Camaro with brown interior, it was just fine till I found a 91 RS with black interior in the junkyard. I got a steal of a deal on the entire interior except for seat belts, headliner, and sunvisors. I spent the next two years searching every salvage yard in the area and all the online dealers. The car got totalled and sits int he yard now with brown sunvisors and headliner and seat belts. I decided I'd never do that again. Fast forward to about 6 months ago... I was goign to have to reupholster my seats, headliner, carpet, door panels, etc so I figured might as well convert to black again. I found a donor car in the junkyard and started pulling parts. Now I still need carpet, door panels, seats, headliner, seat belts, sunvisors, and speaker covers. So here I sit thinking damn I made the same mistake twice.

Stick with gray, you're much further ahead.

The only thing that sut the grey color though is its gonna be hard to match colors when i star buying headliner material and all the tuff i need to make the interio look new with black its all the same but there islike 3 different shades of grey, and most places if you get the wrong kind they wont send u new ones

your lucky your up north, if I did that here I would roast in the car in the summer time, even with A/C.

I personally like different shades of colors in the interior, it makes it look not so bland. just my opinion.

Actually there were only two shades of gray used in thirdgen Fbodies... 82-84 used charcoal, every thing else used medium dark gray. The charcoal is almost black, its easy to distinguish.

Grey to Black

I have started on a similar change over. I had the same dilema. The interior in my 87 Firebird is light gray. It has been a pain to keep clean. From the factory there were alot of dark gray and black interior pieces. I need to have the seats redone and rather than fight with gray staying clean I plan to go with black. I have black seat covers on it now and black will look good in there.

I have replaced the carpet with black. I painted some accents in the car red since it is red. Nothing to dramatic, just a hint. I went into the trunk and used black nauga soft to cover part of the cargo plastic. It is similar to how some of the Camaros had the carpet on the cargo plastic, mine is just done in Black Nauga soft. I got black kick panels, door sills, and rear arm rests. I recovered the rear speaker covers with Black. The car has actually come around and looks good. I have some carbon fiber accents which tie the black and gray together. I cut out the face of the dash and replaced it with smoke plexi. Looks like I have a digital dash.

I plan to attack the doors soon. I have the odd ball Deluxe GTA upolstry package in my base model. I have yet to see any other firebird with these door panels in gray. They either have a map pocket or the upolstry is different. I plan to nauga soft the upolstred part and possibly go with black door handles (If I can ever find them) I would switch them out to another style so I could have black, but I like the looks of them too much.

If you want, I will see about getting some pictures up. Always best to see before you do. I'm sure a chicken about that that I hate to do anything unless I have a way to go back. Ergo parts from junkyards when cutting is involved.

Well I say you go complete black. You can repaint all the interior plastic pieces black no problem. Just remove everything (gut it), sand it down and use the interior paint the truck modders use (its actually from europe or something but it works really good). You can also make your doors completely black no problem, in fact I think there is a tech article on redoing the doors. Or if you want it to look custom you could use black tweed. I would convert my interior to complete black but I'm going to leave it black/grey because I want to repaint the car back with grey racing stripes. Do it man!!! All Black!!!

I will get some posted as soon as I can get them scanned. Might be this weekend. My boyfriends scanner seems to do the trick. My computer at home is having a conflict with my scanner. Man I wish I had a digital camera. Would make it so much easier.

Found some shots

We had some shots online in a directory I forgot about.

http://www.bulldawgmotorsports.com/shannon/

There are some interior shots there. Not many, but it will show some of the changes. I have black carpet now though and a 12 inch sub next to the 8in inch the pic.

I think (raif2.jpeg): dash (raif2 002.jpeg): rear cargo

all the roll1 & raif are of my car.

Formerly this.....
now this......

The key is patience. I found the seats in a junkyard for 150.00 I then waited a year searching everywhere for convertible interior stuff. Then I found a car for sale, waited another 6 months, bought it, swapped interiors, made some money selling the car, sold the seats out of the donor car for 250. So i made about 800 dollars and got a nice new interior out of it. I have since found someone who traded me the red rear belts out of my car for the black ones in his car. If you are patient, and only buy the parts when you can get a great deal, then you should not have a problem.
