getting a project car!!!!!

hey all,

i just put a down payment on a 1987 Z28

its in decent condition but needs some work

i am buying it from MSS, he's the moderator at the street racing board

thanx MSS

its white, it needs a new fender, passenger side GFX

it also needs a new tranny

its got a nice strong motor though.......its a 305 with a rebuilt top end and some performance parts on it.....sounds mean

so i am prolly gonna paint it 100% white (GFX and all) and put in a new tranny...............i am debating whether to put in another 700R4 or convert to a T56.......................

the primer on the front bumper didnt come out so good.............so i wanna re-do that

whats the best way to sand it off????

Strip it with SEM flexable parts stripper. Get it at your local automotive paint store. Works great.

No, that stuff is designed specifically for urethane parts (ie: bumpers and TA lower side gfx). I imagine you could use it but it works slowly compared to regular aircraft stripper, plus it is more expensive. Don't ever use aircraft stripper on urethane, because you very likely seriously damage the parts.

I never recommend using paint stripper on the actual body. It is easier and less messy to sand it down with a good DA sander. Plus if you don't get all the stripper out of the nooks and crannies and cracks, it can eat through your new paint.

thanx for telling me

lets put it this way: when it comes to bodywork, i have NO idea what i am doing

could you gimme some general tips what i should do and in what order to do it??

i am assuming:

use the stripper you mentioned to get the paint and primer off the bumpers and GFX

then sand the paint off rest of the car (metal)
what grit sandpaper should i use??????

then primer the whole thing
then wetsand
(what grit sandpaper should i use?)
then take it to get sprayed

i am going to keep it the original color
but i am gonna try to get them to use a dual base/dual clear coat job

Any areas where you need to do body work, you'll need to go bare. 80 grit should do you fine for that. For the rest of the car I'd just scuff it up with 200-400 grit depending on the power of your sander (feathering out any chips or scratches) and prime with a sealer primer, then a sandable primer. Wetsand the sandable primer. Maybe do another coat or sandable primer, or maybe a few more if needed. Use a glide coat when you think you are close to done.

If you have never done body work before, a book on the subject from your local Barnes and Noble or whatever would certainly help. You can also practice on old scrap fenders and hoods if you are uncertain about your abilities. Any flaws that shows up in the body work stage will probably show up 10 times worse after you paint.

Just remember, paint is a system. Use primers and reducers designed to work with the brand and series of paint you are going to use. When painting my cars I have always put on at least 2 coats of basecoat color, and 5 coats of clear, though 3 is sufficient if you only want to colorsand lightly or not at all. Remember to use flex agent in the paint you use on the bumpers, but don't use flex agent on the main body. It is much much better to paint with the bumpers, side mirrors, and gfx removed from the body (as well as any parts or weatherstriping you don't want painted)

Oops, forgot to mention. Strip the bumpers and gfx after you remove them from the car. Don't do it while still attached to the body. And follow the instructions exactly.

well believe it or not i used this stuff called "marine tex" on my old ss . what i did was sand the spot bare , apply the stuff so its flush with the rest of the body , than fine sand it until it looks right . marine tex is some really wicked stuff it works for basically everything

or you could just replace the door molding , thats why the dent is there

ok cool, so the hardest part (the cam) is out of the way

guess that means i can put some roller rockers on it, and some new valve springs

guess i'll also get some headers..............

and a nice 4.10 rear gear with posi and discs
