Someone brought it up before, but I forget the post. By law if your car doesn't have the RPO code for front mounting (or something like that) it doesn't have to be on. But I forget which code it is. Maybe someone else will know.

I've had mine off for 2 years, got pulled over once and had to pay a $10 fix-it fine.I had to have a cop inspect it and fill out a form, the next day I took it off.The original reason I took it off was because I got a $301 red light camara ticket and had to do 8 hours of driving school.

I've had mine off since the summer, so far no problems.

I had mine off since I bought it in November til 12/26/01 when I got my first ticket for it, and 12/27 when I got the second. I never had a problem from any cops that passed me or that I've driven behind. The cop who gave me the tickets gave me it when I was at work. He was training another cop apparently, so they would go through the lot and pick on cars. They gave me one the very next day, and I was pissed. So I put it on, took a eBay end of auction page for a front plate frame and edited the end date to be 12/20, so that would mean I had won it 6 days before the ticket. I took that to court, and they let me off.

I have not used a front plate since my 87 IROC was new. I live in Ohio with the two plate law and I have never been cited for not having the plate. Been ticketed twice by Lazer and the Ohio State Troopers did not mention the plate which is their target. Just do not give the Law a reason to pull you over, loud exhaust, burn outs and Etc. They use this Law with the plates as a catch all for a ticket. So dive nice.

It all depends on the local cops. If you can get away with it, go for it. The courts and officers don't care if you have a factory mounting bracket or not. If the state law requires a front plate they will tell you to get a bracket. Around here they will pull you over the first time they see you without a front plate--they must get bored or something. In my old Beretta I used to have, I was in a front end collision and 3 blocks later I was pulled over in front of my house for no front plate. It sucks because I always see kansas plates without the front plate--they don't require it.

Around here a local cop won't pull you over for no front plate. but a State Boy will. I haven't had any trouble in town running with no front plate. However i do stick the plate on depending on what i'm doing, and I keep the plate and the mounting bracket in the back in case i get pulled over so I'll just get a fix it ticket.
JIm86Bird, better have knocked on wood with your luck you got pulled over tonight. Your the kid that got nailed by the same cop, in the same spot, twice in one week. HAHA JK buddy. I know in NJ no matter if it is in your RPO codes or not....you gotta have it if you are NJ res. Which I think is gay since the cops never pull ya over from the front. Although I heard it is for their radars to aim at.

Well, here in california, at least from what i've heard, you can mount your front license plate in the window. I just wedged my plate inbetween the dashpad and the windshield by my passenger side 6x9. I've even tinted my windows 15% on the sides and nothing from the cops yet at least. I think for the most part they wont bother you unless they get bored or you do something really stupid like talk back to them or run a light. For the most part if you drive the speed limit and do everything by the book (driving wise) you'll be fine.

I don't know about where you live, but here in MN the only place you need to worry about getting a front plate ticket is if your crusing the strip. So if I'm going to be crusing I put my plate on, but I don't want to put the bracket on because my grille has no holes in it. So I talked to a cop (Who actually understands why you wouldn't want a front plate) who owned a 85 Iroc-Z, he said to put 4 small holes in your licence plate...one in each corner. Then get two bungi cords, run the bungi from one hole, behind the grille and then to the other hole. This will secure it for a little while. When your in a situation where you may get pulled over for it (crusing) get out and put it on. I recomend putting a cloth on the back of your plate to keep it from scratching the grille.
From what I know this will only work with the Z28 Grille.

I forgot where I seen it
but, I seen this dude that attached his plate to his passenger side sunvisor. When it was down you could see it clearly and when you folded it up, you couldn't, just an idea
and it seems it was all legal too.

I was rear ended in the summer of 2000 and the cop that did the police report said "I won't cite you this time, but you need to get a front plate for that car". I was pulled over for speeding and that cop didn't say anything about the plate.

Move to Florida. No front plate law and you can drive your car year round. Of course we have cockroaches the size of a hamster down here. Did I forget to mention they also have wings. (the cockroaches not the hamsters)

I'm pretty sure we "must" have a front plate. I hear what Prevost and the others are saying about the RPO code, but I'm not banking on it. I'm mearly just taking my chances that most police won't care, and I'm willing to eat the cost of a ticket if I get stopped. If it starts becoming habit for NJ's finest to pull me over, then I'll submit and make a bracket to hold the plate that doesn't marr the front nose.

Well, I bought my car in Florida where they only issue one plate because they dont have the law. I also tinted all my windows at 5% right after I bought it, lived there for a year or so with no problems. Move to Texas and had no problems, for a while, got three tickets inside of a month. And on the last one the jerk gave me ticket for the tint being too dark. The good thing is they are all repair tickets, bad thing is you better not have any warrants, like I did. Oh well, just cost one night in Bonham County and $500 to get out, OUCH!

I've owned my 92 RS since new in 92.Never ran a front plate. Don't even know where my front plate is (if I still have it), but have never been hassled for it.
I'm over 35 years old and don't look like I'm a threat to anybody either. When I was 16 and had really long hair, I'd get pulled over for stuff like that all the time.
I think it really depends on the cop.

I got pulled over for having smoked covers on. Had them on for maybe a week or two before I had to ditch them.
This aggrevates me mostly because there are TONS of cars in this city that drive around with smoked covers and have done so since I moved here 4 years ago....
Anyone else been pulled over for that?

Ken

I really don't think this RPO thing is true. If it was, why would we get 2 plates? The state would just have you order either 1 or 2 plates when you get them if that was the case.

Not to flame anybody but I think the RPO thing is bogus. My aunt is an ex-sherriff's deputy and I had her ask some of her old friends that still are deputy's about it. They said unless it is a 1st or 2nd gen when they used to have to mount the plate on the side of the bumper you MUST have a front license plate or they will nail you for it. My car insurance guy used to have a 78 z28 with no plate and had no problem. He bought a 86 IROC and had no plate and eventually got a ticket for it. If you get a ticket it wont raise insurance at all but I think its a $75 fine in Ohio. I took my front plate off 3-4 weeks ago and have driven past local cops all the time and a statey a few times with no problem. I drive past a local cops house every day on my way to and from school and I know he has seen my car. All depends on the cop and there mood at the time I guess.

I just checked the RPO decoder, and VK3 is the code for license plate, front mounting pkg. If it isn't there doens't that mean you wouldn't have the correct setup for a front plate. So how could that be illegal, if you don't have the RPO.
Also it's not like cops know ever single law there is. How many do you think know that in VA it is illegal to have sex in any position other than missionary.

:sillylol: Since I'm in the military I can have out of state plates, do you really think the texas cops know whether you can have your front plates in south dakota?!? HEHEHE. There you go just join the military or move to another non-bordering state and keep your Ohio residence, lol. Later.
XChris1632X,
I got away over a year with out my front plate. As you can see in my sig it is ON THE CAR.
REASON - I had to pay an $85 fine for NOT having it (but my back plate was on and clearly visible). After biting an $85 fine, I said, it's just not worth the risk of another one.
I live in Ohio, so I feel your pain. Granted, my Camaro has a front end already to accomidate a front plate (but I liked the pure black front nose).

THINK ABOUT IT
Just remember if you choose to take you plate off and the cop pulls you over you could still get tickets for other items on you car, like taillight covers, window tint to dark, music to loud, radar redector, licenxe plate frames or any other thing the cop wants to screw you with. What would you rather have a front plate or a cop ripping you window tint off on the side of the road beacuse it is to dark

But if you like the challenge of fixing your car for holes NS is the ideal spot.
Yep, the military thing works. I am currently stationed in Arizona and just like Florida, you only get one plate, therefore do not have to have a front plate. Kansas is the same way, but they issue two personalized plates and I did get pulled over for that!! "Gotta have both plates on, son!"
Keepin the AZ plates when I get stationed elsewhere (13 bucks to get a new title AND register for a year, He** ya I will keep AZ plates!!!!!)

The RPO option excuse is a myth. If it works for you cuz of a lenient officer/judge, then good for you.
We discussed it here:

Well you got Arizona, Florida, Nova Scotia and you can add Oklahoma. Any of those states are "Front Plate Free" so take your pick! LOL Or you can do the same as lancer5067 and I did and join the military!! HA HA!
I'm in Hawaii and they require front plates and the only way you can keep out of state plates is to put a "HUGE" 3" Blue sticker on your bumper, and I wasn't about to do that!! So I got Hawaii plates and put the front plate in my window. Think I might just put it between the seat and the console and if I get pulled over I'll put it back up there! LOL!
