Soon to go candy myself

I have been planning to get my 1987 Firebird painted in candy apple red. Money has been the hold up. I like the car though. I wish you were in GA. I would love to see it in person.

As far as the site. The only thing I saw that stuck out was that some of the pics were blurry. I would put up more shots of you car though. Get some more angles.

I'm working on a site at car domain myself. So far I like them. They are pretty easy to use. Do they have a limit on how much you can put on? Mine has gotten a bit ridiculous.

that is a hell of a lift in the back wonderwoman......

the pictures are temporary and weren't taken by a digital camera.....also using a cheap 30 dollar scanner. you get what you pay for.

so no opinions on what i could change on the car?

I got your car pic of the car and red bowtie on a poster I made in my dorm room, I never realized it was yours. Beautiful car, only thing I would change is get a digital camera, that would help with the pics a lot. If you only want a dc for the net, there is one that records video and pics for about$100, if you want further details.
Since it looks like you've run out of stuff to do to your car, we'll trade cars for a little while and you can fix mine up.

Un4givin: I was lookin at your page and for your cars you say they have 5 speed automatics, but they're 4 speed ya know. And I thought you sold the RS, did that fall through or somethin? Good luck with the 502, sounds nice.

Kandied: I love your car, love the color. Very sweet.

Yes I did sell the RS Kinda, basically I've sold it to my buddy Mark whom is in the Navy, he gave me 1000 now to hold on to the car until the end of his tour. He is on the Rosevelt (spelling) so under our agreement, I'll keep the RS as my daily driver until he gets back, so I can pull apart my IROC and mod it! Although after rebudgeting I think I'll move down to something like a 350Ram Jet. I think a 502 is wishful thinking on my part :/

Kandied,

I love the color and the car, you'll have to let me know when some of the car shows are happening on your side of town, so hopefully i can give you some competition, my new paint job is just about done, just needs some sanding and buffing, then i'll be ready. I want one of those 4'3" trophy's

later

no one said you were interested in trophy's........

more than half the people on this site are against trophies, showing their cars, and anything that remotely changes the stock appearance.

whats your point.

unlike myself who wants to change everything possible and enjoy the trophys i get from it.

I was not trying to come off sounding harsh, A trophy would be ok , I just do not feel my car is ready yet, not even close...............
the body on it is soild, no dents etc..... i want to get it painted clean it up alittle bit more. I am haveing trouble with the charging system right now. I have put on a new altenator, battery, new cables, starter and it still is charging below 8 on my tac. Do not get me wrong in a few months I may try to give you a run for a trophy just not today. in the future though. we will have to see.

Amen to that!

I show my car as well. It seems no matter what you do with a 3rd gen, it is always too stock for shows. I end up having to make my own mods or customize a piece from another car. Then because I try to tie it in with the look of the car, no one seems to see it. Its weird how stock people think my car is till I get around other 3rd gens. Then their eyes are opened and I get called a *****. Oh well. To me most of the stuff I have done is subtle (in show terms) and is just used to enhance the look of the car.

But I got an eye opener at the last show I went to: Southern Trans Am Regionals Show in Pensacola, FL. They had me in the Heavy modified custom. Huh?!

Honestly, until I started to show I had no idea what was involved. Nor what it took to really stand out enough to be noticed, let alone get an award.

i agree, i'm not saying i want to put 3' spoilers, 22" rims, and mural paint. but, even if i did so what; i enjoy seeing what others have done much like i enjoy doing my own thing. i have customized basically everything on my car down to the bolts. yes, most are subtle but enough to be my own style and while i don't think that every little trophy out there is worth things it is nice to be recognized once in a while. i never could understand the mentality of most on here but as so many of them often refer to it..........."to each his own"

if you are going to take time to build a nice car why not get the recogition for it. I do want to take my car to the july car show in NEW YORK , where my mother in law lives . I saw many cars that should not even been allowed to be in the show last year. Their was this Monti that was stoved in on the drivers side and smoked , this 4x4 truck that just had a picture painted on it, and the bitch of it was their were alot of 2001 cars in the show . I was under the impression it was for older cars. They should have limits on some cars. My mother in law has a 76 pontiac sj i thought shold have gotten somthing and my father in laws 1950 chop top ford. they got nothing but maybe they will this year.

Wonderwoman,

That is the one thing that urks me when I show. 1982 to present Camaros and Firebirds always get thrown in together. There is no real way to take a car like mine with 136,000 miles on it and compete with a car with 5000. At least not when it comes to cleanliness. Then people in general like the new stuff better because they are not used to seeing it for the past 20 years. Not to mention the fact that there are appearance mods for the new cars and not a whole lot for ours.

At some shows the lump me into the American Division. Man you can't compete with a vette off the show room floor no matter what you have done.

depending on what type of shows you do you will run into the large groupings like that. typically it's to keep the fact that everyone will get a trophy. sometimes this can be good, but it's also discouraging specially to those who may not have a lot of know how or money to compete with others. if your car is clean an deserving typically you should never loose to a newer car unless there is an obvious reason. when most people judge they do take this into account, again unless your at a smaller show in which their is no real justice or point in the judging other than to give something away. this is a point that has plagued many shows......if you have something worth competing with then terrific, but not every car should be shown. doesn't mean that you shouldn't participate an park your car with others in the show, but to many times have i seen someone who applied a few stickers or painted their wheel covers and become upset because they don't win.

if you go to certain shows such as the camaro superfest for example there are over 400 camaros and climbing every year from all over the country grouped into all sorts of categories making it alot more fun for everyone, this also puts you in a more suitable class.

the only time you run into problems at shows like this is when your going up against people who have paid to have all the work done for them an invested enough to buy the car 4 or 5 times over. but, it's how it all starts. you should just build your cars to your desires and take the best care you can. if you are awarded then terrific, it's not the most important thing. you need to be satisfied with it first; the compliments will come later......

Once I get a new paint job I will better be able to tell. The car is clean interior and engine compartment. Paint looks great for a 10 year old job. Though some spots are newer, shaved areas and new hood. But being a daily driver and getting the bumps and dings takes its toll in the show world.

My mother in law & father in laws cars are well kept and were worth something I will try to send you a photo later to you e address . My car is clean inside & out. My hubby says I am way to protective of my car, I do not drive it in the rain, I cover her up, I wash it almost daily, and clean the carpets & seats every month. I want to take care of her and I may go to extremed but I have put alot of money in her and I am not even half way to where I want to be. I do not even let my hubby drive my car with out me in their with him.

10 years on a paint job doesn't mean much it can still be prestine if taken care of. except that most gm paints seem to not be done very well.

as far as not letting your husband in the car that sounds a little cruel, but i guess i can understand it.

most people consider a true show car to be a trailor queen that is never driven.......to me that is plain crazy. i build my cars to drive them, my car has some nicks and the like from daily driving, it will happen if you drive them. you just deal with it and take the best care of them as you can.

personally, i would rather see a good condition car that was enjoyed rather than a low milage trailor queen with plastic on the seats. but, that's just my point of view.

Absolutely.

Hey, how does the candy apple red hold up to daily driving. I have seen some paint just deteriorate because of the sun and rock chips. But I guess proper prepping and good paints make that difference.

propper prep work and the like is essential to all paint types, but especially candy paints...........the wrong mixture, primer, base, anything; even the wrong sanding material can cause the paint layers to "group" this is were the metallic that's in the first few coats will group making your car look like a disney dalmation creation......not pretty. took us 7 months and 4 trys to get my paint to the way it was, had to go down to bare metal twice. not a pretty, pleasent, or easy task to do. but, it was either the way i went or pay the minimum of 13,000 which was what all the painters in the area were asking. definately worth it in the end.

as far as holding up to the sun, this depends on the type of paint as well as how much sun the paint gets. a car that sits out year round typically won't look as good as one that's only out in the sun when once in a while. again, like my last statement, your paint can last as long as you want it to if you do the necessary things to protect it. right now i've had my car painted for almost 3 years....3 months from her birthday! it looks just as shiny, bright, and brilliant as the day i brought her home if not more so. but this is only because i don't drive her through harsh conditions like snow, acid rain, dirt roads, etc. i store the car 5 months out of the year and the other months it spends most weekdays, nights, and early mornings(where sun is most damageable) in the garage. i had no intention of doing this, but after painting it this way i felt it was the only option....otherwise i'm sure it wouldn't look as nice.

rock chips are unavoidable with any type of paint if you drive the car. it is true that if you have a cheaper paint job it will chip easier, but this doesn't matter it it's candy, pearl, or any standard color; it's more in the mixture of things. if you don't keep up on the chips(covering them up before they rust or chip worse) then yes your paint will tend to worsen. i feel i have alot of chips, 3 i think, anyway; as soon as i got them an hour later i'm home cleaning it up and either clearcoating them or trying to touch it up so not to have any contaminents get under the surface and start the paint to buble and such.

now i will say candy or pearl type paint designs are the worse type of paint when it comes to touch-ups and such. this is only because of the multi layers of colors that will make it impossible to fix a color of this stature if it's in a wreck or has been chipped, scratched, etc. but, this is often the price you pay to have a more exotic type color. i knew this going in and can't say i regret it. although it is disappointing when something happens because you know the only way to look nice again is to repaint the whole car. i experienced this first hand when i recieved a chip right on the nose 1 hour out of the paint shop, some woman cut me off and threw some gravel giving me a chip on my way to a show. again, price you pay to drive it.

most of my incidents where i've recieved some damage have happened when i'm not driving it. one particular incident was one day after i brought it home from the shop, someone accidently hit the side door with the end of an extension cord leaving a tiny scratch. the worst an most memorable was a bracing in my garage breaking after 20 years of use and having a few hundred pounds of wood droping right on the hood..........someone must have been looking out because it didn't leave a scratch, although there was a small lightweight aluminum pipe that put a dime size dent in the hood. again, one of my main reasons why i feel you should drive your cars. even if you do everything right to protect it anything can happen. luckily i was able to fix the hood to look like new, but anything can happen so enjoy your cars.
