gauge cluster removal
gauge cluster removal
Is there any tricks to removing the gauge cluster? I know how to basically get it out. The stering wheel is in the way. Do i have to lower the stering wheel? How would i do that?
Thanks a million

I dropped the column a bit to make the job easier. You might consider wrapping a couple strips of masking tape on the column to avoid scratches. I don't know what your intentions are for the cluster, but while it's out, the time for swapping in white-faced overlays or higher intensity zexon bulbs would be good.

You have to reach your hand behind the cluster, and push in on a spring clip that holds the cable in, and it should pop right out!
86 Doesn't have a cable--at all! You have to pull the gauge cluster face plate off(gray panel)then you'll see a bunch of screws all around the outer part of the cluster--pull those off and the cluster should pull right out. Everything is just plugs.

I simply used a long, flat-bladded screw driver. Don't make the removal more difficult than it is.

Forgot--pull out your little trip odometer plug 1st before doing anything--if you don't you'll crack the clear lens. And if you have a tilt column, put the column all the way down to make it easier on you.
my parents bought me the car when i turned 15. i had one year to mess with it. i did a v6 to a v8 swap. i have had my car in pieces before...i know exactly what i have in and on my car. it is a mechanical speedo. anyway how do i use the blade screw driver?

Pull the speedo out as far as you can and then use the screw driver to push up on the release clip.
