Gauge swap question

I am looking into swapping out my stock 85mph speedo and large fuel gauge(yeah, the ugly cluster) with a different cluster. I can get the cluster that has the 80mph speedo, tach, oil pressure, etc for a reasonable price, has anyone ever done this? Do I have to rewire the whole cluster? run new wires for the instruments?

I can also get a hold of the 145mph speedo pretty cheap too, does this one just require me to swap out the speedo cable?

Car: too many ...
I swapped a 145 mph cluster into my car no problem. Took about 20 minutes. Just removed the current cluster ... took about 10 mins to position it correctly to get it out of there but then once I found the trick, popped it out, popped the new one back in and hooked up the existing speedo cable. Now its about 11 mph off ... but thats because I also swapped in a 3.27 posi rear (from the 2.77) so I'll have to adjust the speedo ...

Just remember any pre 91 is cable driven, any 91-92 is electronic so make sure you get the right one for your car.

Haii is right. There is no need to swap your speedo cable when doing a gauge swap. If I were you i'd ****** up that 145 cluster. It'd look good in your car.

Newb resurrecting old posts again!

So... if I read this correctly, does this mean I can drop a '92 Z28 cluster in my RS without any complications?? I ask because my tach is all screwy/funky and I was just given a pair of Z clusters. Would that work?

as long as you have a 90-92 Camaro. They changed to Camaro to an all electronic system startgin in 90, before that Camaros got the Cable.

82-85 Firebird - Cable driven Speedo
86-92 Firebird - Electronic Speedo (gages)

82-89 Camaro - Cable Speedo
90-92 Camaro - Electronic Speedo

I am 90% sure on those years, if I am wrong someone post the correct years. The only exception to this is that I know of is for firebirds that used idiot lights, (no gages) they all seem to use the cable driven speedo.

You have to know which gears you have now, and get the appropriate gears for your transmission.

When I went to 3.73's I had to drop the driveshaft, pull off the trans cone, and remove the old gears then put in the new ones.

I do not think you cant simply get the gears from the 92 and stuff them into your 84 trans, because the 92 is electronic, and your 84 is cable driven.

hope that helps.
