How do i remove my front and rear bumper covers?(88GTA)
My rear bumper got hit so im replacing that.
and my front bumper is crooked(previous owner got hit, body shop probably messed it up).
So is it hard to take them off and put back on??
This is for an 88 GTA.
thanks
:lala:
Not hard... for the front, take out the top bolts right under where the front of the hood closes. Then, remove the pull clips underneath, and there are then four bolts connecting the bumper to the fenders. The top ones are way up there, bit tight to get to, but not that bad.
The rear bumper is easier... Remove the tail lights, take out the pull clips, then remove the bolts under neath.
BTW: If you need a Rear bumper cover, I have one is GREAT condition from my old GTA. Its orional GM, and painted black, paint isnt too bad. Lemme know!

Car: 1988 Trans Am GTA
I realize this is a very old thread but I am in pursuit of removing the front fascia for paint. I have read through several threads some say not to take the headlamps out, some say take the headlamps out. I think the advantage to is getting to the fender to fascia bolts. My question though is should one start on the bottom and I noted when trying to replace the fog bulbs that the Trans Am/GTA have the lower side ground (fender lower) effect also has the lower pan deflector extension under the car. Can one take those off before fascia removal?
My goal is to remove the fascia as efficiently as possible but also not damage anything else.
Re: How do i remove my front and rear bumper covers?(88GTA)
on my 84 TA i took the headlights out to disassemble the front bumper when the car was painted and the headlights were a HUGE PITA to reinstall. there's no many adjustment points to line them back up with the hood / fenders. i still can't get them perfectly aligned. it's on my to do list of stuff to fix when i get the time.

Yeah that is what I am afraid of. I have heard some folks leaving them but then I question whether you can get the fascia to fender bolts. Another reason I am asking about the ground effects at the lower fender as the belly pan/extension goes underneath the car prohibiting access to the foglamps and fender to fascia bolts.

Alright so since I didn't find a video (that I thought was comprehensive) or thread on removing a Trans Am front fascia, I will add this and if it helps someone great. I also have the benefit of a 4 post.
Trans AM/GTA Fascia Removal.
Remove LH, RH and Center section of the lower air dam
Remove the LH ground effect on the lower fender- 3- 10mm nuts, 2- 7mm screws in wheel well and 3- 7mm under front
Remove the RH ground effect on the lower fender 3- 10mm nuts, 2- 7mm screws in wheel well and 3- 7mm under front
Remove center air dam that funnels air to radiator- 8- 10mm head screws and 4- 7mm head screws
Remove the lower 2- 10mm head screws from the lower part of the fascia to fender on both sides
Remove 10mm sheet metal nuts on the upper 2- screws both sides fascia to fender- these are locators screws for the fascia to fender
Remove 7 push pins underneath
On upper side- remove turn signals assemblies- 2 screws each
Remove 5- 10mm head screws on bracket that attaches to the upper structure. This piece is a full cross car at the top of the fascia and actually has the alignment pins that go to the fender. See yellow highlghts on pic that shows bolt locations
Remove fascia- pull straight forward to clear the alignment pins to the fender. It helps to have two extra hands to ensure you don't scratch up the fender in the process. It will be more important when it goes back on.
Once the fascia is off, taking the upper bracket out is tricky as the 4 studs protrude through the fascia and its tight to get it out. Once again, its good to have another set of hands to help.
Caution- When installing, the two tabs that connect to the foglamp brackets (underneath) must be flexed out of the way for the fascia to go straight on. Otherwise it holds it from getting to its position.

Great! If it helps ones person then fabulous! I was worried on removing the headlamps and alignments on these old jewels. Key is to take your time and ensure you get all attachment points removed then an extra set of hands.
