Body Modifications Plan
Body Modifications Plan
Well, I have mapped out the project for this car, the real sleeper. Zero Profile as I like to think of it.
The car will have no identifiable markings to hint to which of the carline series it is.
I plan on replacing the doors with fiberglass door skins, fiber glass front fenders, and fiberglass 2inch crowl hood.
I want to smooth out all the body lines, and blend the gfx into the car remove the side molding and shave the door handles and antenna. I want nothign but perfectly str8 lines. I am planning on getting the IROC spolier from ASCD. Also tint the windows to the legal max all the way around.
I think I might be forgetting something, I'm not too sure.
As for the engine, it'd be a 383 TPI, me and my g/f are still doing or research on this, but we are gonna build her from scratch, and now that I have a good cash flow coming in, (NEW JOB) the engine shouldn't be more than a 2 1/2yr project!
All the seriously awesome cars around here weren't done in a few months, so no rush. =)
Gonna start body work within the next week or so. =)
What do you all think?
It will remain black
Thats a good quesiton, a few members have tried before and not had much luck, i plan on doing some reasreach on this, possibly custom fabircation, not sure about that just yet. The main problem is the car expanding and contracting do to weather....

Looks like a very nice plan un4givin89...
What made you decide to keep the RS???
On the IROC rims are you going polished or chrome?
Are you doing the body work yourself?
Lastly, How much are you budgeting or estimating
for this project?

Long story on the IROC, I might get one later, but I came to the final conlusion that I couldn't give up the RS either, and gave my friend his 1000 deposit back.
I am going to do all of the body work myself, the great thing is, I have alot of knowlegde in this area, building the engine is where I will do all my learning. When I owned my Cutlass with the famous rocket 350 I did alot of serious body work to that car.
I'm not sure as for a budget, becuase i think of this as a long term project the body work should me mostly low cost, except for the hood and fiberglass panels.
I'd except around $3000 total for body work including paint.
It will remain black yes, 3 base coats, 5 clear, and wet sanded =)
I can take care of most of those this week, gonna remove the stupid lil pin stripe, pull the antenna off and the emblems are already off and pull the door molding as well.
The rims, I think I'll just clean them up, i dont' want them chromed out or overly shiney.

Thats gonna be a really nice car!! Are you sure you want to do 10% tint on the windshield though? Its gonna be really hard to see at night with oncomming traffic headlights and all .. I had 45% on my windshield for a while and it was good. Infact, in my truck I have 35% on the windshield and I think its perfect. Looks like your car is gonna kick ***!!! Hey I might have a tip on the smoothing but its gonna take alot of work ... I thought about doing what you wanna do before I bought the 91-92 GFX. I planned to take out the RS emblem out of the sideskirts and fill it in, as well as smooth the sideskirts to the body. The main problem is the bondo will have nothing to grip to. You can sand it all down and apply but vibrations from driving will cause it to come loose. I think the solution involves drilling small holes into the top of the sideskirts and the bottom of the door and using a wire mesh (maybe chicken wire?) to create a frame for the bondo to hold on to ... so once you have this ugly looking mesh along the bottom, you bondo over that and then it should grip better. It will look whacky when you're doing it but the final product should look good. There's prolly better ways to do this but thats my idea. hehehhe

I was thinking of somethign stronger than bondo , like a fiber glass resign, but that is an excellent idea actually. I will have to talk to some people about that and do some tests...
Let me lay to rest the trick braking once in for all, i finally found the correct wording for were i read that from, and what I was gonna do back in the day when i bought my car:
Ever wonder just how the car did those great 180 degree turns? While it was the skill of the stunt drivers like Bill Shelly, it was also done with mechanics.
A brake differential lock was used and tied into the master cylinder and actuated by a toggle switch. When activated, the front brakes were disabled and only the rears were active when the brake pedal was pushed. End result was the famous "bootleg turn". The system was restored to full braking when the toggle switch was hit again by the stunt driver.

hey mike, what about the door handles off of a 88-98 chevy 1/2 ton pickup?
you could fit them flush to the body, plus, no handles to stick out and smack the air.

Sounds like a good plan. I wanted to get an 'IROC' spoiler from ASCD, but last time I checked, they weren't advertising it anymore.

A courteous remark for un4given ?? wow.. I'm honoured
.. j/k
(I'm not interested in past quibbles you've had with comments made so I'm not going to go there..just bs'ing ya)
The handles are off a 95 (or so) Intrepid but, are also on Neons & I believe the Stratus.. not sure about the last car.
I can tell you this and others who seek to get rid of the crap GM box handles, graphting new handles onto you car is no easy feat and, if you don't have at least some metal working exp, it's not something a DIY'er should attempt. It is not a simple swap. To pay someone to do it (like a bodyshop) would (IMO) not be worth it either unless you've got money to burn.
Even the seen before full size chevy truck handle swap is no easy venture. There are ways around having to use a welder but, not a durable. Just my opinon, I could be wrong.

The money is actually coming from his high end job he has making like $75K a year at 19 which he is so proud of. Don't get me wrong, if you really are making that much money, legally, at 19, thats great, good job. But its hard to believe anything this guy says now..

For you information, I'm currently working as a photographer/web developer for several real est. firms in this area, taking pictures of homes and mantaining their websites.
I'm not even gonna drop to your level in this post, back to the topic...
Deadbird.... Metal working skills I have some of lucky for me. When I had my Cutlass before the Camaro I had to replace the flor pans and weld an quater panel back in place along with repairing some serious rust through spots.
I do like the idea of the door handles flush, but I'd have to do alot of looking at door handles, the one on your car looks great, but the over all shape in my personal opinion is too cruvish (real word?) for the car lines...
Thanks for imput

It's not my personal problem to start stuff in your posts. Maybe if you would stop contradicting yourself all the time, I wouldn't feel the need to bust your *****.
This "friend" you gave the deposit back to- is he the same "poor kid" who was actually gonna buy your "crappy car with all the problems" for so much? I remember a previous post by you saying some poor kid was actually going to buy your car. If I am remembering incorrectly, I apologize.
If I wouldn't have brought up your differing stories, I'm sure someone else would have noticed. I don't think I'm the only one reading the Appearance and Detailing board and the Body and Interior board.

Hell no you aren't, and I hate to break up a good thread with this stuff. Unforgivn, I like a lot of the ideas, they look like a decent plan...but when you just go shooting your mouth with really stupid lies and then not expect people to question you, there's a problem. I can't help but mention the IROC bullsh!t (that never existed..? Was yours but got struck by lightning? Wasn't yours...? Exploded during a freak trick-braking and imagin-NOS experiment...??) because it was SO blatant...it makes anything else you say look pretty unbelievable. "I'm not even gonna drop to your level in this post, back to the topic... " Sheesh....I think lying about owning a vehicle just to impress some people on the internet is bottoming out pretty low...

When I say I am going to do something, I usually do it.
I want flush door handles. Someone needs to write a tech article. I'll volunteer my car for this purpose, I just need someone to come and do it since I don't have the skills.

BTW, keep the personal crap out. If you don't like each other,(you know who you are) stay out of each others posts. Pretty simple really...

The doors, prolly not for awhile, but I do have acess to my uncles arch welder.
Deadbird is the main guy on this topic, can ya give us any tips?
