Best way to clean dirty carpet?

I just got a set of 4th gen seats and have some seriously dirty light grey carpet. It isn't beyond a good cleaning, however I need to know what works best?

Thanks in advance.

A Bissel steam cleaner would be my first choice. Most of the spray on carpet cleaners also work decent (like Woolite). If you have access to an industrial cleaner like Zep, that would probably be better than the spray-ons. Of course you want to do a real good vacumn job before trying to clean the carpet.

Blues suggestions are very good ones. Heres a way to clean it for about $5 and a few hours of your time. Pull the carpet out and throw it in the back of a truck, take it to a DIY car wash and hose it down with hot soapy water and rinse. Probably wouldnt hurt to spray some of the bad stains with a stain remover if you have some. I know this sounds crude, but I've done it before, and works just as good, if not better than some steam cleaners or extractors. It will make it look brand new, guarnteed.

With my seats removed, I hired a professional carpet cleaner to do the job--well spent $25.

I had a steam clean carpet company come out and clean mine and it was excellent when done. Saw all the dirt sucked up. BUt now I reeplaced all the carpet and covers since, but that was in 1996 when I first bought car. Andy

I had Stanley Steamer come to my work and clean it while there. Depends on where you live I guess, I watched them do it though. Andy

Be careful...
I am sidetracked by an unexpected rust problem
on the floor pan. I missed it in the first go round
beacause the rust is under the rubber seam sealant.
I didn't think to scrape it all off fo I could have a look.

At least on my car this stuff has gone porous and acts
like a sponge making sure the pan weld seams have a steady
supply of water ...

I am now very leary of this stuff and am going through some serious pain trying to pull it off...
