Climate controls
Climate controls
I installed a stereo from a 95 Impala in my 84 Camaro last weekend. While I had the stereo out, I was attempting to fix the climate controls, which are stuck on "defrost". I looked at the little hoses that were attached to the wheel on the back of the climate control unit, and none of them looked pinched or disconnected. Can the climate control unit be pulled out without screwing anything up, or is it too much of a hassle? I was thinking of pulling it out so as to get a better view behind the unit without having to pull the rest of the dash surrounding it.
Just got through fixing that same problem. If you read the FAQ's there is a note about this problem. The main vacume line under the hood that delivers the vacume to the switch was cracked. The vacume line is in the wire bundle of AC controls that exits the firewall around the washer pump. No vacume results in full defrost. The line is a hard plastic line, not rubber.

The little disc between all the vacuum hoses and the climate control box (on the right rear of the climate controls) could also be busted; that would cause a vacuum leak, and the "default" is the defrosters.
DO u think it is possible to use the climate control switches from a 4th gen camaro? I really like the look of them, not really where it should go but i figured that i would ask considering it was a climate control forum

the hvac controls from a 4th gen are electric and the hvac control from a 3rd gen are vaccum.. u would have to replace more than just the controls..

Another common cause to that problem is the "manifold" on the back of the selector itself, where all of the vacuum tubes attach. Sometimes that will dry out and not hold a good vacuum, so if you hear a leak as well, that could be it. I heard of a simple way to fix it, after I had done mine another way, but it fixed the problem. Easy way: remove that manifold from the back of the selector and put some vaseline inside the tube openings and reattach it. OR: I removed my manifold (cut it off) and just reattached each tube individually, and put one of the real little zippy-ties around each tube for security. It is alot easier to do with the stereo out, but that's your choice. Hopefully that helps. IF you don't hear a vacuum leak down there, that probably ain't the cause of your problem...

Is that one of the lines that is coming out of the black cylinder to the right of the washer pump/wiper motor assembly? There is one line that comes out the side and disappears into a bundle of wires on the passenger side, and under that it looks like there is a fitting for another line, but there is no line there.

My 1990 chevy truck it stuck all the way to the left. (not the defrost side). Would a line be broke or something else. I know its not 3rd gen but it is GM. Are the two made the same way (camaro/truck)
