headlight problem (don't flip up)

well this is my first post so i guess i should tell you alittle bit about my car. its an 1986 trans am with a chevy 350 in it that has 40k miles on it. with edelbrock carb/manifold, and k&n air filter with edelbrock air filter cover. it has 3:73 rear gears. a 5 speed hurst shifter. t-tops (don't leek ). and has flowmaster exhaust.

Now thats outa the way i can get down to business. my headlights do not fleep up when i push the button. i can hear the motor on the front left but it stops half way. and i can't get it back down unless i pop the hood and try and move it down mechanicly. but when i do it like freeks out and goes down on its own as soon as i try and turn it mechanicly. as for the front right it doesn't even move. i looked closely at it and looks like the headlight is broken off of the piece where it gets held onto the car. o and i can't raise them up mechanicly either. the **** are not broken they are good condition its just i push down and turn. but it like springs back. and i was sitting there for hours trying to. and getting no where fast.

any feedback is greatly appriciated.

PS. anyone know how much this is going to cost me? (for the parts i do the work myself).

The actuator has some gears in them and gear 4 bumpers. Most of the time the 4 bumpers are desentigrated. That is what happen to mine. They are a bi*** to rebuild but possible and cheaper than getting some out of the junkyard. Here is the link to the parts you need.

The fiero and the firebird had the same actuator.

also
David Scott will rebuild the ones you got if you don't think you can do it. I think his price is $40 plus shipping. You Send them in and he fixes them and sends them back.

You can also buy rebuilt ones from him for $100, and you can send you old ones in for a core charge of I think $60. Don't quote me on these prices, but they should be correct.

They should be a tech artical on removing the acuators on this site, I don't know the link sorry. I't is pretty straight forward.

The pass. side is easy to fix, all you have to do is take off the side cover off if you have the 2 wire version, the three wire I would let David Scott rebuild them.

The Driver side you have to drill out the some steel screws in the aluminum body. This is because as soon as you try to tearn them the heads of the screws will break off. The you have to tap it and put new ones in, Use loktight afterwards just in case.

It is also trouble because you have to take out the armature to get to the gear in the driver side, so getting the contacts back in place takes a little time and skill.

I rebuilt mine, well sorta I made the part that was broken, Will be redoing it when I get around to ordering the parts.

The parts are under Electrical
Scroll down to HEadlight

You can get the after market kit for $8 a side, or the GM version
Click on 1987-1988 Headlight Kit for the after market
for the GM
click 1948-1987 Headlight Parts, the whole kit icluding the contact assemblies is $85, its your choice

I will order the aftermarket ones, since I know the motors spin just don't do anything.

For the Broken headlight frame, get one form the Junk Yard, New they are like 130 for it, the Junk yard should be 20-40 depending on what all they give you, Also inspect it closely before buying it make sure its not cracked or broken in any of the hinge points.

My passanger side cracked also, and the first two I looked at the junkyard was boken in a spot or two but then I found a pefect one, on a car that should of never been in a junkyard, The body was perfect, except for the parts that had been bought, no rust, the Transmission was shot was why it was junked, Too bad I didn't find it before half the parts were gone. The car only had 100k on it. Oh well would of been a sweeeet deal if I had.

You can also check my website under "Electronics->Headlight Repair" to see about fixing it yourself for around $1.00, depending, of course.
