Ok, I went and test drove a moded Civic Si today(I don't wanna hear CRAP about this, they're d@mn fine automobiles). Snapped a few pics of it too, but I started looking at the dash and I got a few ideas. Ok, I'm thinking paint my white needles to match the redlines and red zones on the gauges... what do you think? I'd have to try and find a color to match the redline well though... that might be hard. And what about putting Z28 on my tach or speedo or something? I don't want white face gauges, is there a sticker or something I might be able to get to put on? And what about the lights in the dash? I've seen posts on it, but I'm a bit confused. Are they just new lights that replace the ones in my dash right now? I have an '87 Z28, I don't recall exactly how they are in, I only had the dash apart once so far.... If I get xenon or LED ones like MacEwen has, would it get noticeable brighter? Thanks.

just get the white face gauges and paint the needles with toy paint(as mentioned) youll like it all better in the end...at least you could,,,

that's an indiglo gauge, if they ever make them for our cars that's what it's gonna be like, you'd better get used to it, lol. what should i do, I have an extra gauge... just make a trip to a hobby shop with it and try to match up the color i guess huh? I don't really wanna take out the needles too, I just don't think it could be that easy to put them back in, and I've tried taking one out before too, but it didn't wanna come out, i was afraid I'd break it....

If your car is stock with what's in your sig, I don't see what's so funny when the Si I test drove would almost certainly take you without a problem....
I'm sorry, but I can't stand when people make fun of cars they don't even know anything about....

Easy fellas, we're all on the same side here , mostly
.
Why can't they have normal engine codes, at least shorter ones. I'd hate to sound like a fool and someone be like what motor do you have, oh its the BL345kfhGfarif one.

ok so its a 1.6L with 160 hp runs what a high 15 low 16 in the quarter? no wait u put intake, exhaust and headers in it... so you gained around 10 hp.... 170 hp.. runs high 15's?... dont get me wrong... hondas are great cars, they last long, great on gas, but they arent for racing.... its front wheel drive.... you have to put a 6 foot bar on the back of your car to get traction if you want to run anything close to what you can run with a rear wheel drive chevy.... my friend has an ex... i beat him in my jeep cherokee in the 1/4... he went out put AEM CAI, and full cat back, just to beat me... guess who won... the good ol 4.0... then he decided to do a tranny swap, swapped his auto for a 5speed... still the 4.0 had him... im sure uve heard it before... theres no replacement for displacement... and it holds true.... but if you want to make your import killing f-body a civic clone on the inside... go ahead, maybe when you blow away another car it will make you feel like it was ure honda that was fast..... :P

so your saying i should have said that he put a header on his civic? i still think its headers because its 4 ports coming out, not one.... but if a header is correct... it sounds good, still... no matter how many header or headers he puts on his civic, it cant beat a good ol 5.7....

My point is not to tell you guys how great imports are...I don't particularly like them either...but if you dismiss the Honda guys as being a bunch of slow car driving posers, you're probably going to get waxed. These guys are buying more speed parts than ever, and are spending some serious $$$...ask a Holley or NOS rep about the "Fast and the Furious", and he'll grin from ear to ear. Even Summit has a whole catalog for these guys now, while the TPI/LT1/LS1 section is only a few pages.
It wouldn't hurt some of you guys to do a little research on whats out there...not so you can all go rush out and buy Hondas, but to KNOW YOUR ENEMY! The days of slow imports are coming to an end; heck, I have seen ads for MINIVANS with 240hp lately! Now wouldn't that suck to have some housewife in a fricking minivan full of rugrats blow the doors off your Camaro at a light!
your right, if you throw a supercharger on a honda, u can run 13's, but what happens when you throw a charger on a 5.7
but you are right, if they spend their money on performance upgrades rather than underdrive pullies that "double your horsepower" and ground effects and neon lights to match the fast and furious cars so they look like they run 10's they can be fast, my friend has one... except he went for looks, then performance, then wondered why his 95 honda 5-speed w/ intake and full catback still couldnt beat my 89 automatic jeep cherokee w/ K&N airfilter, and a flowmaster...

Heheh, that minivan comment reminded me of a clip on the net. I uploaded it ot my webserver, its about 950kb.
Mini-van Vs. Camaro
Whats funny is that the Mini-van wins!! Ran 12.65 @ 105mph. Its modified of course, and its on the spray. But beware, there are more cars like this out there, and they look completely stock.

Ha, I remember that van, it's not on the spray, it's a 2.2l turbo running silly levels of boost (16 psi) and fitted with a giant intercooler off of a Ford Powerstroke Diesel. I'll look for the web page, but there's about half a dozen of these things out there that run in the 12's.

I had read somewhere that it was on nitrous. Oh well, can't trust everything on the net. All I do know for sure is that it ran 12.65. ^_^

2.2 Turbos can be pretty quick...a buddy of mine had a modified Omni GLH that ran 11s, and his daily driver...a 93 or so Spirit R/T 4 dr sedan...ran mid 13s with just a few bolt ons. Mostly just slightly higher boost.

I remember the 2.2l Turbo's. They were in the Daytona's and such from teh 80's and early 90's.
They were also what powered the Turbo Interceptor by PPG. But that car was basically a mopar at heart. This car was the featured car in the movie, "They Wraith". Crappy acting, good cars.

Some of the bolt on body mods do help them euro cars. Like a new front clip can help put colder air in the engine compartment while removing air from under the car.

the dumba$$$ in the 4th gen flies by us and cuts us off and nearly clips are front end!....we pulled up next to him and started yelling at the little punk and said "this is what a REAL SPROTS CAR SOUNDS LIKE" he revs up and takes off and its got that rice sound going and then we see those nasty rice tips sticking out.. we started to laughed and then we just had to make him look like a dork in front of his woman
to make a long story short we made a fool out him by smoking is butt up down the road, everytime we ran, we won, u could smell the NOS (as the rice boys say it)
i hate rice just as much as the next guy....but i hate punks that think they have fast cars and tries to prove it by being d!cks even worse!!
yeah but comeon lol
even v6's are slow (except for the grand national gnx twn turbo and lotus esprit turbo we had at work lol)
i just prefer a v8,nothing feels the same,runs the same,sounds the same..
you start tweaking a friggin 4 banger then you might as well go buy a neon or a civic and add hella type-r stickers on it from autozone lol

its still hot rodding
This is the car I have now. A 95 neon. Call it a *****, bumblebee, whatever.... But dont tell me that FWD cars arent made for racing. Theres plenty of these lil mopars runnin from 12s to 10s in the 1/4 mile all motor. Before anyone makes statements like that, make sure you know what youre talking about.
you may say im biased, but then again look what board im posting on....oops my mistake. So any e-thug is welcome to take shots at my car and try to argue that these cars are crap, but take a look around, its a new trend. I'm looking for a 92 formula now, but thats just because I've wanted one since they first came out.

back to "the wraith" in that movie there was a late 70's early 80's datona, it had thw 2.2 turbo in it and was rwd i believe. those early style datonas were fast for there time, and can be made extremmly fast with today's products. arent those 2.2s mitsu motors anyway, if it is, there are loads of parts for those via rally-art.
i dont like rice. but i have an 84 supra as you may know, and yea, it is a jap, but it is not rice, it all depends on what you do to your car. in my opinion, rice is all show no go.

ahh buy your forgetting the difference....stock 350 in firebird= runs for 200,000miles no major problems
peeon 2.0(wow what displacement) dohc with turbo, header(not headers lol) and nos to equal hp of 350 =runs for a few days before blowing a rod, breaking the crank, or scattering that piece of krap neon transmission...
dude i work on these pieces of krap all day long....we liker guys like you....ricers make us alot of money with motor and transmission repairs
JUST DON'T THINK ABOUT: the always bad egr valves, head gaskets(hahahaha),constant brake problems, constantly breaking window tracks, easily rusting panels,,bad door checks, constant dome light switch and wiring failures, taillight harnesses shorting frying from the taillights to up in the dash, cheap locks corroding stuck ,a/c evaporator problems,ac compressor problems, water pump failures, water leaks, and instrument cluster circuit board failures ....just overlook all that and hey that neon isnt too bad of a car!!!!
when you get your t/a you wont look back
im done preaching

A Honda B16A is one of the most venerable motors ever made, lasting longer than most motors, and even after 10 years or so, is holding up quite well even when many "bolt on" parts are applied to it. It is one of the first na motors to have 100 horsepower a liter, and is often referred to as the 350 of the import world, because if you want a part for it, someone makes it.
Go ahead and laugh if you want, but the sad truth is, that people are cranking retarded amounts of power out of these smaller engines, that are meeting emissions, and are quite reliable. It might be a econobox image that Honda has, and all the "Fast and Furious" crap, but to be honest, going fast in a Honda isn't hard, compared to most cars. The aftermarket is huge, and isn't going away.
My friend once phrased it as building a mountain on a trailer park foundation. He is right of course, that most people try to make something into what it isn't. I can point to many examples. TBI guys get the brunt of it here. Neons, Civics, Cavaliers...should I continue? Any car can be made fast, the only thing that stops you is money. If you where all living with your parents, and had no bills to worry about, I can guarantee that you would be spending all your money on making your car great in your ultimate vision. Not realistic for most of us, but you all already know that.
Hondas, Neons, Cavaliers....most of those owners don't have to worry about that. Most people who really do any modding to thier cars, will do so appearance wise, for lack of knowledge on performance outside of intake and exhaust. A majority of the owners are kids, because these cars are cheap and reliable, and don't kill you on insurance. Parents might get them one, or it might be a first loan.
The aftermarket is there for them for another reason too. People want stuff for them. These cars sell in the millions every year, and there is a demand for more stuff, brought on by the masses who think it's great to have APC stuff on your car. These aren't the people who, except on a rare occasion, you should be afraid of.
Next point is....you are never as fast as you think you are. Sure, you might have what 200-250 horses stock in your thirdgen...lots of torque, too. You might get the jump on that Honda. But a 200 horse Honda will hand your butt to you, because his car is about 1000 pounds lighter. He might not have the torque to beat you off the line, but his engine runs a much higher rpm, and he will catch up to you, and eventually pass you. I'm not saying a Third gen can't be fast, because we all know that would be a lie. But you wouldn't be exploring the option of an engine swap, like an LT1, if you knew you could extract alot of power out of your stock engine. Honda's are alot like that. Stock, they are slow...but put a b16a in a 2000 pound car, and you are looking at a car that can do 14's out of the box. The Honda owner just spent 1500 for a complete swap to get there....and that is way more efficient than any power adder out there. Once you do add a power adder, the Honda owner is now in low 13's and maybe into 12's. A smart Honda owner can get into those times cheaply, reliably, and still achieve good gas mileage.
I'm not a huge fan of imports, but I do know my enemy. If you want to go fast out of the box, you buy a 1st gen eclipse turbo. You buy a fourth gen bird or camaro. You buy a Supra, a Corvette, or a Viper. You don't buy a Honda for these things, of course. You bought a Honda because you knew that you wanted something reliable, with good gas mileage. But it is nice to know that if you want to go fast in a Honda, you can. I wish every car had the aftermarket that those cars had.
Don't get me wrong, I love third gens. I like third gens because of how they look, and what they can be performance, and appearance wise. But I do know that the import thing is not a fad. It is not going away. And with the combined powers of the SUV, and the import, it killed the American Muscle market.
Know your enemy, respect your enemy. Copy your enemies strengths, and utilize his weaknesses against him. There is a replacement for displacement, and his name is engineering.
And I write way too much.
And to the guy with the neon- That is a very nice ride. Note that there is no wing on his hood, no stickers from companies all over his car. There is no mention of R anywhere on his car, and he isn't claiming to be an SS or anything. His car a good example of what tasteful modding can be. Not every car is rice when someone does something different to it.
And fast? Dump some money into a turbo, and go eat some V8's.

well, to whoever complimented my car thanks.
Hello E-thug!! Mikeage3 said that neons have multiple problems with windows, headgaskets and everything else: not if you take care of it. I got 127,000 smooth miles on this car. Doesnt burn anyoil, nothing. You must be wearing a wife beater at the moment to be commenting like that. How many rust holes are in your daily driver?
Now I'd love to see a Chevvy Small-block with that many miles start up in the morning.

I had a 2000 Neon Highline "expresso" 5 speed. That thing would peel off some rubber any time I asked it too. Side by side with my camaro it was the winner everytime. 215stock hp on a little 4cyl, on a car that weighs half of what my camaro did.
Don't knock something because you don't understand it. There is 4 cyl's making 400+ dyno'd hp that still get awesome gas mileage, and are daily drivers, not to many camaro's (unfortunately) saying the same.
"sport compacts" are made to drive the kids to school while giving dad some kind of thrill on the weekends. A lot of people just take it a step farther and I say more power to you. Build YOUR car the way YOU want to.
I will always like my camaro more though

envus......i work at a dodge dealership! Dont tell me what i dont know! Out of the cars i work on,id say 65-70% are neons! Alot of the others are ***** trade-ins(acuras,hondas,eclipses) that have the rings burnt or the trans trashed out. sooner or later you will have multipule problems with that car....i do have to give you a hand for not putting a 20' wing on the back or a dude with a swoard on the side...
my daily driver is a 2000 cadillac deville...not a 65 chevy pickup like you must think. It has no dents no scratches with a aluminum v-8. for a big *** car its damn fast, and it also gets good gas mileage.. I dont race it, its my daily driver, not a race car.... lol
thats what i have the trans-am for....to decimate all the ricers out there that have stock neons with a g-efx kit,a megaphone chrome exhaust tip, and some 18" rims.
I guess its a preference thing...do you want to drive a econo car with a 4 banger or a full size car with a v-8?
i pick fullsize its up to you what you want to drive dude

saying you work at a dealership just proves that you dont know jack. I am telling you that. You service cars for idiots. I'm having fun with this, what else do you want to argue about? Maybe that overpriced northstar v8? So this is were I would say your Trans am is crap or something, then you would defend your pride. Sorry, if you want to feel like a big man, go push around some kids in a "*****". I'm not wasting my time.

you know what the bad thing is? it is the fact that ALL cars have these problems, ford, mazda, and other aisian cars have window regulator problems. gm has a little circut breaker in there window motors so it breakes the conection whenever the window track gets old and put the motor under any stress, that is what causes the stop and go window up problem, and ALL car have wireing problems, from vetts to f-bodys to lambos, vw's, audis, stangs, contors, vipers, avengers, neons, rams, silverados, supra's, skyline's, honda's, kia's, daewoo's, and any other car out on the road. i know, i have worked on a most of the in the above. i am an electronics tech at a local body shop, i fix wireing, electrical problems (ie. window motors, printed circutry, ect) minor mechanical, and do some sanding while im at it if need be. so it is just not the rice that has problems, it is (can i stress this more) ALL cars. we are not perfect, neither are our cars.

BTW a well prepped 2.2 Chrysler was fairly cheap to build (Chrysler has discoed a lot of the good parts now), and pretty reliable. ANY blown car will blow head gaskets if its not tuned properly, regardless of make. I prefer F-bodies myself, but nothing could be more embarassing than having your V8 F-body waxed by a beat up Omni!!! I have seen it happen more than once. For those of you that think there's no beating your V8, you are SADLY mistaken! Some of them (2.2 Chrysler, DSM AWD turbo's, etc) can run low 12s for less than $2000 in mods...try that with any 3rd gen other than a TTA!

i wasnt talkin about the concept car, i was talkin about the datona withthe digital dash the the guy in the corvet raced and alomst ran him off of the road for the pink slip. you know the style woth the non pop up headlites like what are on our camaros, i am pretty sure it roasted the rear tires. i also looked at one of these cars at a local dealership, i am pretty sure it had a driveshaft back to the rear wheels, and it was a turbo too.

i duno... ive been looking to buy a thirdgen for a long *** time, once i looked at a real project car, one w/ 187K miles on it... and it started right up, i was really suprised, but they do run with 150K+ miles on them, and it wasnt tpi either... good ol 4 barrel
And as to the engine swap for more horsepower deal. Take a junkyard v8, bore it, hone it, slap on some vortec heads, junkyard everything else, and you can have 300 horsepower for under 1,500. You want 500 horsepower? mildly port the heads, buy decent everything, and you can do this for under $3K... you just need to know whare to look, and do the reaserch...
hell im doin it to my car,
87 camaro v6 w/ spun berring $750
block w/ forged crank free:P
vortec heads (bare) $375
ill finish the list when i get the rest of the parts.... but its gunna be a 450 hp beast
