Notchback questions

I just recently picked up a factory origional notchback hatch.. and i ran into an issue when installing it, the struts that hold the hatch open get in the way when you try to close it. (not to mention that the end on the hatch doesn't mount the same) I was wondering if someone could shed some light on the subject... let me know if there was a different mounting point, or just a different set of struts for it. Pictures would be helpful.

thanks a bunch

Tim

They had a different mounting bracket (for the ball on the car side.)

Unfortunatly, every part of a Notchback has been discontinued, so something custom based on any pics you could get would be the way to go.

yeah i kinda figgured that it would be discontinued. i am trying to thinkg of a way to make the stock stuff work. the ball on the end is not what i am conserend with. i think the mounting point for the shock in the car is different (sonsidering the hatch would hit the shock if it is in the same location.) I will have to figgure something out.. till then it is back to the old "stick in the hatch" routine.

Well actually i didn't find it. Me and a friend of mine have been working on the car for a while, and there was this day where he broke a whole bunch of stuff (accadently of course) and one of the things that he broke was my spoiler.. and he says "don't worry i will find you somehting better" 2 days later he tells me he found a notchback hatch.. i was happy. it's in pretty good shape.. there were some scratches in the fiberglass, but i only payed 450 for it. so i think i made out pretty good.

here are some pics of factory notchbacks

i haven't seen an aftermarket one that i have liked, but the factory one is very nice.

all of the pics i have of my car with the notchback are found here http://www.ss-perf.com/pictures/88formula/notchback/
I dont have any interior shots at the moment, but i also havent done the hatch struts. i dont have t-tops, and dont go in there too often, so it wasnt a priority. eventually i will get it done.

Tim,
Thanks for sharing. That's the first Formula I've seen with a notchback, it looks sweet... I don't like all the GFX on the GTA's, I like how the Formula's just wrap around and the notchback sems to add to that... When I get mine in a couple of weeks I'll post pics...

Anyone else to help with this strut dilema? From what I see, possibly a differnet strut is used and a little bracket that moves the mounting point down a couple of inches from the stock location... I saw pics of a notchback car @ CarMotorsports for sale...

OK, replied to your message

I also thought i would let you know what i had done so far with the struts.

When you get the notchback, if it is origional and has all of the hardware, you will notice the mounting point for the struts is actually a litte ball.

I discovered that my CRX that i was driving at the time had the same thing, so i took the ends of the struts off of those, turned the struts around on mine, welded up a little bracked with the aid of my friend steve, and made a bracket to step it down in the car. I didnt like the way it came out though, so i was looking for a new way to do it in the car.

I would also like to see pics of how Blkdth87 did it.

I'm getting one just like that... I think I'm switching out the spoiler for the same style without the 3rd brake light...

As for the spoilers that came on the 91/92's, there are 2 point per side that are welded to the window frame, so they would not work with it... maybe earlier years were different.

Mine is an origonal, but was a little messed up when i got it, G & T Fiberglass fix it for me, great guys. He pulled a mold off of it. Last i knew he hadnt finished it just yet, he was busy with orders of hoods. But he had mentioned trying a different spoiler idea for it. I guess try talking to him about it? he was saying that his notch would end up being lighter than the factory one.

LOL kind of nice that someone else is posting pics of my car.. haha
