How hard would it be to put a complete '90-'92 dash in my '86 IROC?

How hard would it be to put a complete '90-'92 dash in my '86 IROC?

I prefer the look of the updated 1990-1992 Camaro dashboard over the "old-school" look of my 1986 IROC. How hard would it be to swap dashes? My speedo is cable-driven, so I'd need a converter of some sort... who sells these? Does anyone have any pictures of a successful swap?

If I were to do it, I would re-wire my whole car, Install the Dash, and go from there, but that is me...

Figure about 6 hours to remove old dash and install new one (not including the time of removal of the dash from the 90/92) thats also assuming you have nover done this before...

It would depend on how crazy you were, if you re-wired your engine compartment & all... Of course it also depends on your current car and the wiring harness, and how hard it would be... I know its doable...

You might be able to get away with installing the dash, and running some wires (installing the speed sensor too) from the trans.

This is a picture of Klayburn's new car from his post over in Appearance and Detailing. It doesn't show the dash too much but you'll get the idea. Anyone have any better pics of the updated '90-'92 dashboard?

I know the dash you're talking about but I dont have any pics. When I update my 92 B4C to a 4th gen interior, I am planning on swapping the stock 92 B4C interior into my 90 RS. But instead of using the 92 Camaro console, I want to use a 92 T/A console because it has smoothed edges just like the 91-92 Camaro dash. I think they would look good together. But as far as swapping it in, it should be pretty much bolt in. Dealing with the guage cluster is a different story. All the 91-92's have electronic clusters (VSS). I say swap the dash but try to keep the old cable driven 86 cluster (if its possible, not sure if that is a direct fit)

Yeah, that does look a lot cleaner than what I'm used to... 85maroz28, is that picture from your '85 Camaro? If so, how hard was the swap?

Its not THAT hard of a swap, but its not a "just bolt it in" ordeal either, the side mounts where it bolts at the top is different on the two styles, so you gotta do some bending and fighting to get it on and lose the ability to bolt it up there, but just bolting it along the front edge and the bottom two ends holds just fine.

I've been posting on the same subject and haven't gotten many replies. I've got an 86 Z-28 that I've been wanting to do that to. What about the speedo and the wiring? PITA or cake? Details please.....

I like the way that looks, Z28racer... but it's still on the '90-'92 dashboard (which would require me to do the swap anyway even if I went with aftermarket gauges). I think that you might have a little more space to work with than the older layout. I haven't actually measured anything, though.

I picked up my 4th gen T/A dash last weekend at a local junkyard, when I finish the swap I'll be selling my 91-92 style dash and cluster, not sure when that will be though, between college and work I dont have much time.

I may be incorrect here, but I *think* the speed density cars use a different VSS than the MAF cars. I think they use a 4khz pulse instead of a 2khz pulse. I think the SD computer has a flag you can set to tell it which of the 2 VSSes you use, but the 165 doesn't. What this boils down to is that your new electric speedo is going to need a different VSS than the ECM. You'll have to buy an expensive converter from Dakota Digital or maybe JTR.

Why not get a VSS from a 86-89 Firebird then?

OR while your at it, convert to SD...

Because the 90-92 uses a different one! That means that the dash needs the 90-92 style, but his ECM needs the 86-89 style. See the problem? Either your gauges work or your ECM is happy. Can't have both.

I have put 91 & 92 Speedos into my 87, I have had no problems...

Firebird to Firebird tho...

If you convert to SD then your dash and your Engine would match... probably get a little better performance too (IF YOU HAVE TPI)

Umm, the interiors are the same for a 90 camaro as they are in a 92 camaro.

the Firebird consoles from about 1985-1992 were all the same, the only change that was made was in 1990-1992 they actually made the shift indicator work.
