Hood Struts on Glass hood

I am tired of using the broom handle method of propping my hood open. Will new hood struts hurt my fiberglass hood or will it be fine?

What kind of hood is it? Some of the lighter weight hoods I wouldn't use them on, but if its fairly heavy, and reinforced well enough in the hinge area, I'd use them. Redraif's hood (Suncoast) has been on for 8 or 9 months with stock (working) hood struts and we have had no problems. If its a light hood, you may want to get some weaker struts from a salvage yard.

You may be better off going to a junk yard and get some that are not capable of holding the stock hood open any more, but are in better shape than yours. My stock ones were too spent to hold my hood up, but are such a good match to my harwood hood that I can position the hood at any height and it will stay.

thanks guys, its an american sports car big block hood. It seems pretty heavy to me and well braced. Anyone else have one of their hoods with good struts?

You can always get the struts for the 82/83 Z-28. They had factory glass hoods and they are designed to work with them. I know a few poeple who have them currently. You can get them from Classic Industries. I think they're around $25.

My Ram Air II hood works just fine with normal good struts.

You can go to auto-zone and get replacement struts for the hood. They are cheap enough and will do the job RIGHT. I have replaced hood and hatch struts from them and they work great.
