Cowl finally mounted

I bought the 4" cowl off E-Bay awhile back and finally got it mounted to the "new hood" that will go on my car. When I first set it on the original hood there was too much space left in front of the cowl and looked kinda dumb, so I got a GTA hood, took out the front cosmetic air intakes, blew holes in both sides to offer what little help it may have in circulateing air through the engine bay and lowering temps. I'll post some before pics, then he's supposed to squirt it by next week, but we'll see. He has an insurance job in there right now and I don't need my stuff till next season so my hodd is'nt priority.

last on-he has a car in the stall so I could'nt get a straight on shot or anything. Once he gets it squirted, I'll lay the grill thingys in place to snap some "after photos" but I want to have him sand them down and repaint them also so it'll all look new.

Wow that looks like really good fiberglass job on that hood. Its the first ive evere seen but it looks like they were made together.

Now since your using a stock steel hood with cowl inductiuon how much steel did you remove underneath? Does it make the hood a little lighter since some steel is taken off and replaced with fiberglass?

I'm doing the same thing to my hood. I started it, but I hate body work, and can't do it right. I have little patience for it. A body man offered to do it for free, so he has it now. The bad part is I have to get it back and sand all the bondo off first. He said I hade to much on it. Maybe 1/2 gallon for one side was a little overkill!!

Here's a pic of what I have now, so u can see why the cowl is a much needed addition for my final product, I actually bought the cowl off E-bay rom a guy, and now we keep in contact-the guy doin the body work was impressed at how well the cowl was made and the final fit and finish-pretty good since I only paid $75 for it. I had to cut a hole in this "new" hood for the breather to fit through, actually made it 1" bigger round for extra clearance. The guy doin the work used expanda foam in some of the open areas where support was cut to help strengthen it and keep it from rattleing. When he put it on, he first glued it with some kind of urethane they use on corvette peices? then rivited it to the hood for additional strength and less chance of cracking, fiberglassed it in, then bondoed the heck out of it to make it look factory-from the time I dropped it off, he completely stripped the hood, did all the work to where u see it in 3 days, I was pretty impressed. Everytime I've tried body work I use about a gallon of bondo for a rock chip and spent most of the month feathering it out-hence I don't do body work-takes a special kinda patience. As far as weight is concerned the little bit of mat. I cut out for the breather to fit through, it might ultimately be a little heavier cause of the compounds to blend it all into place. I don't know to tell ya the truth. All I know is that I super happy with it so far and can't wait till next spring when it's all done.

Just came back w/ the primer pics. He said he still has a little tweaking to do before she gets squirted. Hopefully this hood is unique, I know I have'nt seen a hood like this in my area, and I can't remeber seeing one on this forum either, but I may have missed it though. I've seen plent of cowls, just not a GTA style w/ 4" cowl. Like I said before hopefully next week it'll be red. I'lll try to slide the grills into place for a more "finished" look, but they will get sanded and squirted or replaced also. Don't know what to expect by cutting the front holes open to let a little air through, guess I'll find out next season.

Car will find it's way over there, depends on how fast the shop putting the cage in can go, only gonna be an 8 point I'm gettin from Jeg's, so hopefully it goes as smooth as my buddies 4 hrs later then it's done.

That looks really good, and a nice idea also.......

Should look great on the car once finished, always good to see people do custom body mods....

It was one of things that I stumbled onto dumbly. I thought the cowl would be alright on my factory hood till I sat it in place. You can see from the first pics of the post it looked gay as hell, hence the brain strom to fill in the front void; and walla: GTA hood!

Funny thing about the car when I first got it (went to get it) my grandpa new a guy that ran one of those cruddy car lots with like 8 cars and they're all ****-you've seen em. Anyways I was lookin for a project car and ole gramps called me and said come down and look at this firebird, it aint in too bad a shape and he only wants $500. Went down there, body was in good shape, paint flaking, but straight and everything was tight yet. Had the 305 in and everything worked-but the guy at the lot made it a point to tell me the pin stripping on the bottom of the car was a limited edition thing. Of course I acted like o really, man i better buy it then if it's that rare. **** I've seen 3 just like it in my area so I knew he was just as dumb as he looked. It did come with the steel rallies like that were on the early 80's grad prix's and I got the rims on it now for like $40 just to make it look a little better for the time being. I've had a lot of fun racing this year in it, learned ALOT off this board about the car and got different ideas. The only thing I'll say and I've said it hundreds of times this year-once this ones complete-hopefully all by racing season next spring-I'll never own another one-waaay to hard to work on for an all out race car, so I'll keep this for a toy and back-up (tryin to get the wife to race it next season) Then find a full framed something or other for the drag only car.

yeah, those are the same rallies, but mine came I'm assuming stock color they were dark silver on the protruding spokes with a lighter gray the rest of the rim, can't remember as those were the first thing to be replaced. I did however mount my slicks on the stock steels for the whole season until nationals when I put them on the ones u see in the picture. Before mounting I painted them "aluminum" cause I had it laying around. Gave the other 2 to my buddy who's running a 66 GTO and he painted them black like yours. Either way they are ugly, really no way to make **** look any better than freshly painted ****.
But hey, these are "rare" models.:lala: so instead of hot-rodding them restore it
