Unstable speedo
Whassup with my speedo? it quivers and jumps around a bit as I drive down the road at a constant speed. The tach is nice and stable but the speedo trimbles like it has a chill. Is this thing getting ready to fail? Bad speedo? Bad cable? Bad gears in the tranny?
Thanks.
Thanks.
mechanical speedo right? Your problems could be due to a lack of lubrication in the cable assembly. Does your speedometer sqeak and chatter also? I've found that graphite works best on the speedo cables.

Yes, mechanical speedo. It does not (as of now) make any noises.
How does one go about lubing the speedo cable? Thanks.

Pull the cluster out, then pull the cable out of the housing. Graphite or wite lithium grease is what I found to work best. If lubing the cable dosent smooth it out, check the gears in the trans that run the speedo. The teeth could be broken or chipped causing your needle to bounce.
t-top hit it on the spot. I do believe that the graphite is easier to get down the length of the cable, as white lithium is fairly thick.
LOL, never squeeze the graphite tube while the top is off though

Tremo said that his jumps around. What about one that doesn't even register untill you hit around 25 mph or so, and then ever so smoothly goes to about 70 even though you're only doing about 50?

Yeah, I was thinkin that it was probably in the gauge itself. It was like that when I got the car, so I'm kinda used to it. Besides, I drive with my tach anyway.

My speedo has completly failed on me!!
But what could have caused it?? I checked where the speedo hooks up to the tranny and it all looks good?? WHATS THE DEAL??
Driving without it is kinda fun though

Mine jumps just a little at around 35, and then it goes completely nuts around 100-105, to the point that I have no idea how fast I'm going (not that it really matters at 105
) Any idea what would be causing this? It's not squeaking at all, my old one did that. I don't know that it'd be something to do with the cable, my first thought is that something slips in the transmission. Any thoughts?
