Hood won't open - HELP!!!

When I pull the hood release, it just pops up maybe .5 centimeters. The release handle is loose like when it is fully open, but the hood is barely popped up. You can't pull it open, and you have to push it back down for it to latch again. What is going on?

well to get it open, i had to get under the car and release it from there. after that i extended the spring on the hood a bit longer. then i adjusted the rubber screws things that you can adjust on each side on the body.. another good adjustment is the locking mechanisn that hooks on the body with two bolts.

i finally got the my hood to work right, i dont know why it all of a sudden it did that but after adjustment i am not having any problems..
good luck

My bad I didn't relize that you didn't have it open, When mine wouldn't open it would just click I'd push down on the hood hard again and pull the lever it will almost always open the 2nd time.

Happens on mine occasionally.

I have to call one of my boys to hold the pull handle out, whilst I give the front of the hood a couple of sharp pushes down.

for the problem with the hoods that are sticking they need lubed. spray the latch with some kind of degreaser to get all the dirt out and then give it a bath in a lube like WD40 or something like that. Mine did the exact same ting and it was embarassing when I wanted to show people my engine and the damn hood wouldnt open and then I had to beat on it then it would pop up. I did that to my car and it works like a champ now. Next problem is to get the damn thing to open evenly, one side likes to go up faster than the other.

when i pull the hood release nothing happens then i pull up on the hood and it opens. I then procede to adjust and lube all moving parts. Then it works properly for about 2 days. Then the cycle repeats. I love working on cars. Rock on!

Hood-

I was having this problem with my 91 RS.

WD-40 bath (on all the hood latch and release cable) took care of the problem.

Though, I also replaced my gas-charged hood shocks at the same time, so that may have a something to do with it.

To Success-

I also replaced them at the same time the shocks but it still does that.

These darn hoods

I had this problem, not anymore. I use WD-40 periodically on both the main latch and the "dumbass" catch latch. Ya-know the extra latch for those of us who leave tools under the hood and the hood doesn't catch the main latch. The main thing that I found that helps "pop" the hood is the spring on the hood next to the dumbass latch. The spring after some time might get crushed down so I just pull the end of it and stretch it out so you get more "pop." I do all this once in a while after working under the hood and I dont have any problem anymore.

I use a spray lithium grease on my hood latch it seems to work much better than wd40 and sticks around a lot longer also works great on door hinges and latches

I third that, it must be a thing w/ the Firebird hoods. I hit it on the bird decal on the front clip.
