91 steering wheel removal

Hello everyone,
I tried to search without bugging you guys on such a minor issue, but the server won't let me. Any way, I'm curious if all '91 Camaro's had a airbag mounted in the steering wheel. If so, what's the proper step's for removal? I know there are four screw's at the back of the steering wheel holding the horn pad in place, but it can't be that simple. My curiosity is peaked, because I've heard of horror stories of airbags deploying while trying to remove. FWIW, my horn pad has no indications on it that it is equiped with one as I've seen on other GM vehicles. Thanks in advance.

You definately have an air bag. For safety you might unhook the battery and if I remember correctly there is an SIR fuse to remove. Anyway, you should be fine, but you might want to sit in the passenger seat just in case. Take out those torx bolts, unplug the connector from the air bag. Then there is a coil, and the rest is like any other steering wheel.

Tackle this at your own risk, I am not responsible for any injury.

Yes defantly take every percaution when working with a air baged equiped steering wheel. I have seen a guy that got messed up by one going off when he was tweaking with his steering wheel. He got knocked out for a little while and a nice concusion.

Thanks for the info. Now, another question. How do I go about shipping the airbag without it deploying in shipment? I thought maybe one of you might of replaced there's, and may remember how it was packaged.

Be extremely careful about any type of airbag removal. We used to put them face down in the parking lot at school during shop class and supply them with power and they would go off like a gun shot. This is extremely dangerous and after seeing them shoot like what had to be a mile in the air i have a whole new respect for them. Never do this it is not safe. Again be extremely with working with them. -John

LoL! John brings up another good point. After you take it out of the car don't EVER leave it sitting face down. Just in case.

I know what its like to get hit with one of those... sure it left a big circular bruise on my chest but it also saved my life when I totalled my 92 RS 25th anniversery Camaro .
