How do I remove the shifter handle?

I just received a complete NOS auto shifter plate that I bought. It looks great! Anyway, how do I remove the shifter handle? I know there is a little plastic button type thing on the front of it where you can't see but I'm afraid of pushing it too hard and it breaking or something, should I just go for it or what?

I'm not sure what little hidden plastic button you're referring to, but my car is an auto with the shifter handle with a button coming out the side toward the driver that you have to push to put it in gear. If you have the same kind of shifter, it's really easy to remove. You can feel (and see it if you move the shifter back to first) a little metal "U" shaped staple right under the handle handle part of the **** on the front of the shifter. It holds the **** onto the shaft. Just grab that metal staple in the middle with a needle nose plier and pull it straight out (toward the radio). After this is removed, the shift **** will pull straight up and off of the shifter.
