you would normally get bombarded with replies telling you to use the search button, but that feature isn't working right now. the topic has been brought a lot, many people say they want to do it, some say they are working on it, but as far as i know, know actually has done it. as for the kit, do you have to install yourself? $2000 sounds like too much money to do anything to the doors, especially if you still have to do the work. if they are $2000 installed, and you have that much money that you can just throw that much into your doors, then go for it. personally i could think of a lot of things to do to the car for under $2000 that would be worth it much more to me.

i think gullwing doors would be imposible on 3rdgen, since with thirdgens the window would have to support the door opening.
your could make a frame around the window and then pick up the door. but i think the roof would need some serious strength.i would love to see what it would look like on a third gen.it seems like a cool idea but i would probably look stupid.
I talked to the guy that was going to make them. They are already asembled with fiberglass doors, and the frame is bolted to the door. All you have to do is drill some mounting holes and strikers, and then bolt up the frame.

fiberglass doors, does that mean lexan windows which you can't open? i don't know from experience, but that's what i've heard. i'd go for it though, sounds cool.

I have seen pictures of a couple thirdgens with scissor doors, but never heard of one with gullwings. From what I understand, the thirdgen scissor doors were super expensive custom jobs, and use a patented hinge. Sorry, I couldn't find the thirdgen pics, but here's a pic I took at the Detroit Auto show of a Murcielago that has them...
Good luck, post pics if you ever get it done!
Good luck, post pics if you ever get it done!
lamborghinis (among other cars) have scissor doors, the original "gullwing" benz had gullwing doors , in a thirdgen that would mean a door and a t-top as ONE , where the hinge would be located on the t-top center section (or of course it could be made from a hardtop but then you would have to cut out pieces that would lift up along with the door).
either way it will be expensive and either way you will have to resort to fiberglass doors , which will make it illegal to drive on the street and highly annoying as you will not have a working window.
can either style be made to fit with our current doors , power motors and normal windows ? sure , do you have ~20 grand to dump on a stupid thing like that ? I Didn't think so...
(I realize you can bolt up fiberglass doors and drive around and nobody will know) , well that is until you get t-boned and there's shrapnel everywhere instead of bent metal , but hey , it's your life and your bones that will take the hit
just for reference these are gullwing-type doors

lets just say fiberglass shards because shrapnel is usally somesort of projected chunks of metal. now i think you got mixed up with what a gull wing door is and scissor doors. for scissor doors i say go for it. 2k for a complete setup doesnt sound bad. this company makes hinges for fieros and it just may work with a third gen if you use a stronger strut. for all the people that say it wont work they have no clue. it's beeen done before with stock doors but all we've seen is pics not a tech artical or "how to install scissor doors for dummies". as for safety with fiberglass doors your a big boy and should know whats safe and not safe you make your own decision.
Thanks for your repleys.
Thats a good point about the fiberglass doors. I'm still recovering from the broken leg in my last accdent (t-boned a suv at 40mph, wasint my falt). All ask the guy see if he could use the stock doors. Dose any body know how much they weigh anyways.
just to make sure its the gullwing doors like on the delorean.
Agin thanks for the post.

I'd do scissor doors over gullwing doors... I've seen pics of alot of cars with scissor doors and they look ALOT cooler and you can actually open them in a parking lot with 2 cars beside you. Probably easier too.

Yeah the sisor doors are played out "especially after looking at that ebay link by sanchez" but honestly how many cars on the road do you see with gullwing or sisor style doors? I havent seen one in over 6months since a lambo came thru town.

The two importers here in my small town have the sisor type doors but they were done cheasy and unprofessionally. So I really dont count them notr do I see them on the road either
they are always broken down. Even when I go to little rock or fort smith I rarely see a sisor style car.

I would like to fab up a set of gull wing doors for a t'top car. It really wouldnt be that hard if you like fabricating "me", fabing up the support and frame for the door, adding a second striker and release, making the hinges for it. I would like to get this old 83 Z28 with t's that is completely striped out and try this for fun
maybe this summer I might just do that.

bump looking at old topics and i wanna see a thirdgen with gulls myself... its something i reallly want to do and noone has the b.a.l.l.s to do it... if someone has a welder and some scrap metal and a old rs or something just try it..... make a frame to attach to the door... hinge it up, prop it up and give me some pictures!!!
i agree that the lambo doors are overrated but if i cant find a good solution for gullwing then im gonna stand for lambo.

I think its the dumbest idea but its your money and can blow it anyway you want. But like nolanr0413 your gonna need some serious mods to the roof and door, not worth it. Member

You'd need to reinforce the entire roof....
and I'd assume you'd do it on a car without T-Tops
You'd have to redo all the inside and outside trim, figure out where to put struts, get the right size and strength
it would definately be a project, interesting to do it for kicks...
I wouldn't want to do it on a car you were going to drive without testing it somewhere else first.
Anyway, those are my thoughts, I like building things, just don't have the expertise to do it, would need to be a body man in the least to even try it.

Did any of you guys watch the cartoon Mask when you were kids? The leader of the good guys drove a camaro that would convert into a flying car and the car had gullwing door that acted like wings. Find the Toy and check it out. That toy was the coolest. I have not read every post, but I don't think nor can I believe anyone has brought that up.

If I ever win the Lottery (Impossible since I dont play) I know of a local guy that put Gull Wing Doors on a 1967 Toronado back in the 60's That car has the Frameless style windows like our cars... THere is also a YUGO custom Job with Gull Wings floating around...
If it can be done on THOSE cars I do not think it would be a far stretch to do it on a Camaro or Firebird... I think a car with T-tops would be the easiest to execute...
John

I've been reading the forums for some scissor door information myself. I found these postings and it sounds like there are a couple of things going on here.
First of all it sounds like no one has successfully converted their 3rd gen to scissor doors or gullwing.
Second some of you dont care about your 3rd gen. I'm writing specifically to the people who disagree with scissor doors. You obviously dont have a good paint job on your car for one. Two you dont care if passengers in your car smash your huge bulking doors with their wide opening radius into another car. And three you must be perfect and never open your door too fast or two wide when you get out of the car!
Putting scissor doors on a 3rd gen is the most obvious choice. Have none of you parked in a cramped movie parking lot where the spaces are barely wide enough to fit an import. Think about it you need less space to open your door than a civic. It just goes straight up, no more smasing into other cars. Your idiot friend or sibling or whoever not caring about your door and dinging your brand new paint job. It would never happen again.
I think its the perfect idea for a 3rd gen.
