The guages at night light up just fine. During the day its a bit harder to read. I have idiot lights, so all I need to read is the speedo. At times, I have to turn on the running lights to see during the day. It is really not to dark to see, but the reflections from the sun or a light colored shirt make it hard. Luckly, I know the car well enough to guesstimate the speed most times.

 

I don't have a speedometer, so I guess I don't have to worry about that one . My biggest concern is not being able to see the gas and temp gauges and getting stranded somewhere. I had always wondered if it would be possible to have all the gauges blacked out and only light up when something important happened, like getting to 1/4 tank of gas, etc. But that's probably too technically complicated to be physically possible.

 

attached is the 5" autometer recall tach i had in my camaro a couple years back. it was a mostly strip only car, so it wasnt so much for looks as function.
yes i know the steering wrap is ugly.


btw one thing i never understood about this site. if the noobs keep asking the SAME questions over and over, why dont you guys make some kind of FAQ of thoes questions instead of saying to do a search? all they get in a search is 40 threads that end with do a search.

and dont tell me that you have a FAQ. i read it alot. it has a ton of useless 3rdgen trivia. but VERY VERY little tech question stuff... so while it may answer the "how meny 92 RS convertables were built?" question, it doesnt answer the OH SO SIMPLE "how easy is it to bolt in 4thgen seats question."


my personal opinion is, if you arnt going to answer the noobs question, up shut the ****.

 

wouldnt be too hard. if you wanted to do so.

most of the gauges use resistance values.
create a circut where once the value reached a certin level, it energized another circut... like a light to light up the gauge... or a idiot light... ect..

My temp, volt, and oil are all separate guages that are not blacked out. As far as lighting if there is a problem. thats whgat the idoit lights do in my dash. I had to add autometer guages cause I did not trust the light up if there is a prob. Had the temp light not come on and overheated. Blew both headgaskets and cracked a head. Hence adding guages.

 

I'm loving all the 4th gen leather interiors. I was really impressed with the tan matching 4th gen leather seats in the 3rd gen!! It's hard enough finding black/ebony ones and not graphite.

 

If you are referring to my interior - the reason it matches is that I bought the seats first, then got samples from the carpet place to find a matching color which was then used for my carpet/floor mats. Then I had painted mixed to match the carpet/seats and used that to paint the interior panels.

the arrogant attitude of some of the members coupled with the outright stupidity of others technical "advice" just turns me away unless im looking for somthing that i cannot find elsewhere on the web.

for example, i was doing a search for 4thgen console swaps for a 91 RS convertable. so far the greater majority of the results have been for threads that contain the words "DO A SEARCH" heh.

honestly, whats the use of a technical website when you can never find anything and no one wants to discuss what has already been said?

if you've ever taken it apart you'll know what im talking about:

remove the old tach. you do NOT have to take out the dash, just undo the torx screws for the outer cover. then the screws for the clear plastic "glass", then the black sheetmetal stamping that seperates the gauges, then the screws for the tach.

on the white plastic, drill a small hole at the bottom corner for the tach wires to go thru.

i mounted the tach by a kinda unique method since its not ment for in dash mounting:

take a square of sheetmetal


bend it so its a curved.

cut a round hole in the curved metal that the tach slip fits thru

cut the clear glass part so it doesnt go where the tach was (i just didnt use it again.. i can touch my needles.)

assemble the dash, but under the top cover, loosly mount the sheetmetal... keeping the top cover loose, slip the tach in


as you tighten the top cover, it will flatten the sheetmetal. as it flattens the round hole changes shape and grabs at the tach.. holding it there rather well.

Regarding that 4th gen dash swap:

1) Will a dash for a 95 camaro fit ok?
2) How about gauge hookup?
3) How much time would you say invested in it, including getting
the gauges functional, heating ducting, etc?

I can get a 1995 dash for 100.00 at a local junkyard.

ok guys, what do yall think about this idea: i want to cut off the console, maybe just below the shifter, pull out the buckets, and put in a bench. or completely lose the console, relocate the radio (maybe where the glove box would be on other cars) and put in maybe a hurst shifter on the floor. this would look strangely pleasant to me..... maybe i should go to chevelles

just take the seat brackets off your seats and weld them onto a bench seat.

 

gonna keep it pretty much stock, just Grant wheel and black floor mats, red leather 4th gen seats would be nice though!

 

Daaaaaaaaang!I just bought an 87 T/A. I have big plans in store for the car inside the car and under the hood. Let me just say you are all and inspiration. Mine will take awhile due to the whole Airforce thing, but in my time stateside I'll do all I can. I'll send you all pics of the product when it's closer to done. I added neons under neath the seats, and in the vents. also, blue EL peddals, and the stereo ring (only turned on by request, i tink it's tacky, but it was free) Aside from the ring and pedals, all bulbs are hidden, and it looks alot better in real life. Also, i have some nifty walmart seat covers (my seats are brown i had to do something) chrome shiftnob, a brushed alluminum stereo plate, and finally a custom 3D looking headliner (I posted pics in another thread, so i won't here). Looks pretty decent IMO

hey guys, will parts from a 6er 4th gen fit. I want a console in my t/a, but I won't find one from a 4th gen t/a or z28. A 6er is my best bet for availibility

Just don't tell me to do a search...
