yes there is a few minor things I still wanna get finished. there is a bracket that is right in front of my hood release that Ihave to cut off and the glove box has to be adjusted a little. I am putting pics up in anotyher post on my gauges in my hood.

Basically, I just measured from the window back to the dash in the middle. then took another measurement on the right and left side. I then put pieces of tape at those measurements on the 4th gen dashpad and used a spare 3rd gen pad to scrib a line along the 4th gen pad. I left a little extra material on the 4th gen pad in case my measurments where off but they werent and I had to go back and grind of more material to get it to fit nice. so, basicaly, it was a shoehorn job

No not yet, the dashpad and my piller trim dont line up at all. there is a 2" gap on each side. Im gonna try and see what Ican do with a pair of 4th gen piller trims. If that dont work then Im just gonna put a piece of black plasitic in the gap to cover up the metal frame.
OMG u r so lucky!!!!!!!!!!i want a 4th gen dash in my car! but i just dont think i could do it, 2 much wires and i dont no anything about the wire i can make it fit in there i am sure but the wires oh just thinking about them... is there alot 2 deal with when it comes to the electriacl part of the swap??

very nice install there on the dash. I wouldn' t have wanted one from teh early 4th gens like you have, but its still nice anyway.
I am seriously considering a 4th gen dash for this TA of mine. Been looking for resources on how to do the swap.
So far, your install is one of the cleanest i've seen, besides Fatal88's

Lets just say its not a plug in and go play situation. The 2 cluster harness connectors have to be cut off and spliced into the 4th gen conector wires. It took me about 4 days to figure ot which wires went to wich which wires but when I connected it and tested it, it was right on the first try.

I would rather have the newer style dash as well but they are harder to find and more exspenive. Plus at the time I didnt know what was up with the newer style GM gauges and digital odmeter.
Thanks for the compliments on the clean install but you gotta send some over to Custom X's. I like his the best. Its the color combo that makes it so good.

Looks great. :hail: That's what hod rodding is all about.
Not to mention that IMO silver/platinum/grey make the best looking colors on a 3rd gen.

Very nice job. Just replaced those same seats with Mr mikes seats. How did you get the speedo and tach all to work right? Once again nice job

Holy smokes those look great! :hail: I have been meaning to ask you about how you got your speedo working right with your trans? I would really rather not speed an arm and a leg getting the translator from jags that run. *shudders*
That dash assembly looks really clean in there, and that whole setup is probably cheaper than getting the translator for a t56, too. Hmmm......

The tach was a basic plug and play deal. I just spliced the tach wire from the 4th gen cluster into the tach wire on the 3rd gen cluster, as for the speedo, I am running a T56 and tried to see if the speedo would work if I just hooked up the speedo wire to the VSS and it didnt. I already had the SGI-5 box so I used it and hooked it up the same way it was when I had the old dash. only problem is, the speedo is wacky and reads like 80mph at idle and works like a tach if I rev it at idle. As soon as I drive foward, it goes to zero and starts reading right. My 3rd gen speedo did the same thing so I think I have a wiring issue like a bad ground or something. Ill get to it now since the weather is getting nicer.

I have a T56 also so I use the SGI-5 box too. What about heat and ac controls. Also on your computer and engine mods who did the work and or burned a new prom?
Thanks Mike

I ditched the A/C and the heat only works out of the floor and defrost. I didnt bother running hoses for the vents. I never use them anyway. as for the engine and computer mods, I do all my work myself. I dont trust anyone else and I cant see giving my money to someone if I can do the same thing he can do to cars. As for the computer itself. I am still running a Ed Wright chip along with my stock chip. I havent got a chance to have a chip burnt for my setup. Im still running the stock heads until the warrenty expires. until then Im leaving it alone

Hey bottled, I'm in the same boat as you on the dash/vent holes by the pillars. Granted mines a bird dash, but the principles the same, I was talkin to a couple guys-first I stopped by an interior shop and they were kinda stummped about what to do and make it tie in correctly, then I talked the the guys that did all my body work, they told me to get the pillars out of the later models, and they'd cut them off and blend them into the original pillars and repaint so it'd look factory, so that to me is about the best option since the pillar is gonna fit our "original" car perfectly and the molded cover will fit the new dash like it's supposed too. Just got to get ahold of Bruce at Hawks again, then find some down time since the season starts in 2 weeks

ya i wrote the wiring down someplace. the thing with th ewirng is that all the years are diferent. your best bet is to just get both year books for the 4rd and 4th gen and start matching them up. get as many as you can and then ask me which ones have you stumped. are you in the middle of the swap now or thinking of doing it? My 4th gen dash and console is up for sale. Im asking $350 and its already trimmed up to fit in any thirdgen. its a 96 dash and console
I had the same problem when I swapped the cluster in my 93 Z28 to a 95 cluster. The VSS signal for a 93 is like a third-gen, and the 94+ signal is different. If you have a 94+ VSS, it would probably make your new cluster work without the signal box. A 93 VSS would have probably made your 3rd-gen original cluster work with no converter.
My 93 had the same symptoms, 80 mph at idle, revs like a tach. I just put the 95 face on my 93 cluster to solve it. It's in the electronics, I think your converter box is unnecessary.

well the dash is up for sale so the VSS issues I have will be adressed when I get my new autometer speedo and cluster setup put together. Hopefully I can figure out this VSS signal crap. the worse part about it is that if I hook the VSS signal up with the SGI 5 box, my idle goes up to about 1100RPMS. I cant figure it out.

Our wiring should be the same.My dash (I scored complete interior for $125) is from a 95 Formy, so wiring should be the same as yours.
Right now I'm in the planning stage. I think I'm going to replace the carpet while I'm at it since I'm ripping the complete interior out. I'm also gathering a lil bit of cash for the misc. expenses I'll prolly come across. I know I need to figure out a way to connect the dash vents, so I just need to sit and look right now.

I am extremely interested in completing this swap as well, As for the gauges, im going to use all autometers, and mount then in a template where the factory 4th gen cluster is...other gauges that wont fitt will be mounted in an A-Piller pod. Other things im worried about are the heat issue, gaps i can fill myself, and the console im also worried about. I have an auto with a B&M console megashifter...and im not too sure how ill be able to make it match up with the 4th gen console...maybe some cutting

I couldnt pass up the deal so cheap. I can easily make that back on just the seats once I get the D.side fixed. They arnt power but they do have the Air Lumbar in both of em.
All I really wanted was the Dash/console
cant use the back seats with a 8point cage anyways

No PM that I rem. E-mail me
