help t-5 Shift **** - Metric or Engish threads?

I want to put a Hurst T-handle shifter into my 1984 z-28 (into which I just put in a T-5 5 speed manual from a 1983 z-28).

Hurst sells T-handles with either metric or English treads. Which one is on the lever from the t-5"

Thank you for your hekp

George

i beleve it to be metric. When i did mine, i cut the shifter down a few inches. THen, I die and tapped new threads on both so it wasnt a worry.

Check Jegs.Com. They have them listed for 82-92 Camaro/Firebird T-5's and the thread size along with it. Hope this helps.

Wow! what a saga. I would have thought that many people would have bought aftermarket shift *****.

I looked at the JEGS on-line catalog, they described a lot of shift *****, but weren't clear as to which one would fit the t5.

I callled Jegs and there the technical sales support was clueless except to note that the industry hasn't been standard.

I then called the local Chevrolet parts dept. He was clueless.

I then did an internet search.

I found a number of references to the 6-speed being metric with a
16mmX1.50 thread, but little on the 5 speed.

I found a site "Third Gen Resource" that sells shifters for 5 speeds. THey show 2 English thread sizes.

3/8 X 16 and 7/16 X 20.

I will call them. If this doesn't work, then I will return to the hardware store armed with these thread sizes and the old ****, and maybe I can find out what it is.

I am Amazed at how difficult this seeminly simple task is.

THanks for the responses, and suggestions.

I know it's a metric thread. Something like 14MM or so.

Don't know the pitch or threads per inch though. I have tried the aftermarket myself looking for a decent shift handle, but so far- no dice. I've even sent two "universal" ones back because they didn't come with an adaptor big enough.

I can gaurantee you that it's not a 7/16x20 or a 3/8x16. Unless you have a T-10 or a Muncie..... Sorry, I can't help you any further. I've heard of some guys tapping out and threading one themselves...might be the only way.

Yeh,

I have a five speed.

I guess that ***** from a 6-speed are NOT interchangeable with the ***** on a 5 Speed.

The t56 is metric, But what is the t5 ???

I have a 5 speed thirg gen, I got a leather wrapped shift **** new from the GM dealer that is made for a 4th gen SS (must be 6 speed). So a 4th gen 6 speed **** will fit on a third gen 5 speed. So if you have the messurements for the 4th gen 6 speed, it should be the same.

Why not just get a shift **** from a 4th gen and save the headakes. They will screw right in no problem. And wont look like some crap ric-er add on.

Thanks Jawsforlife1, I will double check the 6-speed thread size.

I am 51, and I was young during the prime of the muscle car era, so the only shifter for me is

A HURST T-Handle.....

I assume that **** boys don't know how to spell Hurst let alone adorn their little cars with the T-handle.

THanks for your assistance.

I dont know if you know...

But you can get a nice leather wraped Hurst shift **** for a 4th gen. It has a nice big H indented inthe top. You can either get them off ebay or at the dealer. You'll pay an nice price for them though. About $125 at the dealer, or a little cheaper on ebay. I get my regular round ball wraped in leateher for $25 from the dealer. 4th gen **** is the way to go.

Sorry but I'm not a big transmission guy, and I know I'm going to get ragged for asking, but what exaclly is a T-handle. Is it a regualr stick, or does it have the horizontal bar.

Are we just talking about the ****, or the hole shifter???

I guess I shouldn't have wasted my time responding to this. If you see my sig, I have an '83 T-5. But what do I know?? j/k

BUT I'm glad to hear I'm not the oldest one on the board....I'm kickin 40 in the *ss!!

Anyways..I'm with you on the Hurst T-handle. Now if they only made an in-line (V-gate) shifter for our cars....

I went over to camaroZ28.com, and asked the 4th gen guys. Here is what I found:

The T-56 thread size it 16mm x 1.5

And if the T-56 **** fits on a T-5 stick. than the T-5 is the same size as a T-56, So.... the T-5 is also 16mm x 1.5.

I drove a manual car with one of those once. It was the most uncomfortable POS. In an automatic it's nice because you're only going forward and back, but with a stick you've got to go side to side and no matter how it's positioned, it sucks in all but 2 speeds.

I'll stick to my round MBA ****.
