Any Suggestions on Removing This ...

It is a coating that is on the wheel wells. Judging by the paint under it, looks to be put on at the factory. I have been using a razor blade but taking forever.
thanks in advance.

that is the factory undercoating, maybe you could use some kind of paint stripper. Do you plan on recoating it.

Razor blade, that gota suck, if you can find a sand blaster that would work (just block off the area's you dont want to get blasted), or a power sander. Aside from that maybe you could get some paint remover from Por 15, you spray it on and the paint just bubbles up so it can be taked off w/ a putty knife.

take your right angle grinder and put a wire wheel brush on it. not only does it go through it like butter, but it will take care of any surface rust as well. this process will make alot of rubbery dust and you will get dirty. also make sure you clean the grinder after this use as it will get rubber caked on to it and can become a fire hazard.

That's actually about the easiest/cleanest method for removing the rock hard factory coating that I've found. Heat it up with a propane torch and then using a small putty knife, chisel or razor scraper, it comes of very easily. Any bit left missed by scraping comes off fairly easy with laquer thinner or acetone.

Using a torch and a GOOD scraper works well......but it's TOO clean

What's the fun it that......use the grinder w/ the wire wheel attachment.......it's fun, and besides you haven't lived until you've had that nasty GM undercoating in your hair.....

it is a fun process, really really fun. I would suggest to wear some sort of mask and make sure you wear some sort of eye protection. pieces of wire like to make their way loose and fly everywhere.

by the way, i wish my rear fenderwells looked that nice. i mean without the rust and all.

I think the wire wheel is the best idea.

Why do you want it off and please tell me you're going to replace it.....

NastyL98: I am in the process of completely stripping the IROC top to bottom. The car was rustproofed (zeibart) in Canada when new but I live in California now. I will paint the entire bottom with some rustproof paint or por15.

You think it is needed?

OK finally found some time to remove.

The clear winner was torch and putty knife. I also found heating the metal made the rustproffing peel right off. When the rustproofing was heated .. some of it stuck to the metal.

Now time to strip the passenger side.

Car has 0% rust. Guess rust proofing does work although it adds a lot of weight to the car. My hood and hatch shocks failed soon after from addional weight.

rubbermanz28:
Good idea but this stuff laughs at a preassure washer.

The hatch and hood were rust-proofed?

Yup. The hood is fully coated underneath but the hatch only has a small bit at the rear where the spoiler attaches.

These rust proofing guys are horny. They spray in every hole they find.

Ha, Ha! I just noticed the Huggies box in the first picture. I didn't know you could use that as some sort of garage tool!!! The one thing I have discovered since having a baby ... baby wipes rule!!! I now use them to clean the interior. They are great! Better than Armor all. Gets everything clean without the oily residue.

good tip USA-1.. too bad my lil bro is 7 now...

ahh why are you guys removing it again? I havent seen any die hard reason i should get under my car and take off the rustproofing. if anything, i wana leave it there since its done a great job up to this point. and where is there rust proofing on the hood and hatch? Also, on another note.. how do you get that black tar like stuff off WITHOUT stripping the paint? I got one side done, but cant seem to get the other side without taking layers of paint off.

USA-1: Good eyes .. Our girls are 7 & 3 now .. I am using the old boxes to store parts and you are right the baby wipes work great. Troops even requested them in Iraq.

bigals87z28: I had aftermarket rustproofing applied. Factory did not treat hood or hatch. Nothing wrong with leaving the rustproofing on. I decided to strip the entire car to clean it up. This is a several year project to turn this into a weekend runner. You may try heating and using a hard platic scrapper that will not remove the paint. Other than that .. Kreskin (sp?) may know a way.
