car broken into
well they got in
and bust the left hand side of the ignition...
so the key turns easily now... and since they left the door open the battery is now dead....
do I need to replace the whole ignition or can I just replace parts on it?
more details, it won't engage the starter, the cog is not there anymore and now I have to figure out how to fix it..
$500 for a rebuilt one. or $150 for one from the junk yard and i do it myself

Do you need a whole new steering column? I might be able to find one down here in the bone yard for less than $30.
I would definatley just replace the steering column. It is a whole lot easier than friggin with taking it all apart. You can have a lock cylinder made at a dealership with the same pattern as your key that went in the old column.

What would the shipping charges to Vancouver, Canada be
I don't mind doing the work... I got a line on a replacement for like $150 instead of $500 for just a rebuit collar..
it's only the collar that's broke...

I'm gonna finish taking the steering column appart today to find out what I really need..
It doesn't look like any of the wiring is damaged or anything like that.
PM me, or I'll check back in here... need to go get a steering wheel puller.

Nah it's not the starter...
Its the ignition switch... the back end of the ignition cyllinder was ripped off...
The cog on the end of the ignition switch is not on and I need to figure out how to put it back on together...
I could prolly hot wire it with the key...
soon as I figure out what I'm doing and what's broken..
anyone know what size/pitch the threads in the steering wheel are for the puller? I bought a puller and it came with 3 different bolts.. none of which fit.

Hey Waltersb
If you're just in Vancouver, take a run out to Pick A Part in Chilliwack. You can pick up a used tilt column (with keys) for $45cdn (plus taxes & that fun stuff).
A much cheaper alternative to getting dealer parts or having a column shipped from somewhere in the US

I just got an entire interior from a junked '86 Firebird. It was in showroom condition. I just finished cleaning up the seats that had a few grease stains from other people pulling out stuff.
The steering column is $36 US. It's still there as of yesterday. They don't last long. Let me know if u want it. Lots and lots of 3rd gens out there this week.

I'm going to stop by the bone yard tomorrow. I will let you know what I find in particular to an '89. Wasn't one there as of Thursday, but I will let you know.
I will need to find out the weight of the steering column less the steering wheel and then I will be able to calculate the total by going to the USPS web site at www.usps.com

I'm not sure long I can wait for the parts...
I'm going to a GM dealership tomorrow... and talking to the guy there he said he knows what I need and it'll cost me about $200 total (CAD)
I appreciate all the help, and possibly in the future I could use some stuff from down there...

Well I spent $180 on parts.... $100 on a charge and $60 on a steering wheel puller and the flex plate compressor
The metal tilt bit is broken but I think I can get away with using it anyway... Putting the cog back on and the little spring that goes with it....
Having some issues with the flat spring that the ignition slide sits on... it doesn't seem to have a hangar on the down side that's supposed to keep it in place..
But, with a charged battery the car starts
only noticed something, I think one of my pumps or the tensioner has a bearing problem, making quite a loud what seems like a metal on metal noise sort of

Bone yard run was decent today.
Got a working water pump for my windshield washer. I can now squirt water over the back of the T/A.
Steering column was gone. Someone already took it. Sorry 'bout that. If you still want one, I will still keep an eye out for it.

Most of the pieces that are gonna be the real money cruncher are available on a lot of GM vehicles so I'll be ok.

My car was just broken into as well, and did the exact same thing by breaking the back side of the column out. The only reason they couldn';t start it was becuase my B&M Megashifter's "in/out of gear" switch told the car to "not start". Anyway, they left my headlights on and looted all my gauges and stereo and whatever else was in the car.

Hmm that's exactly what mine looked like, I just didn't have a camera...
I'm putting it back together atm with the tilt metal piece inside broken on the steering wheel end, the collar for the wheel lock pin is busted... I've been playing with the parts together in my house and it seems to be ok...
That part is available off a lot of other cars.... so I'll try to find it for cheaper than $400... and do the fix later...
I got the car started after charging the battery so that's ok, the only other part that's still broken is the dimmer switch actuator..
$20 little plastic part. Will try to avoid fixing that now too...

Ok I'm stuck.... trying to put things back together....
Does the slider that's moved by the Cog have a spring under it?
if so I'm missing it...
Also, seeing as the cover I have isn't broke I can't get the turn signal actuator back in..
How, the heck do I get the turn signal arm off, I don't see any philips screw.... I have cruise control.
So I'm kinda stuck
