Types of leather....
I want to get my 92 Firebird seats redone in leather, but I don't know crap about the different kinds of leather. What kind of leather is a "good" leather, and what kind should I stay away from? I am looking for something that looks nice, is soft, and also comfortable.

Why dont you get 4th gen seats already in leather? They are much more comfortable and probably work out cheaper unless you really want a customised job.
i want my car to stick out a little bit, but still maintain a semi-stock appearance. Another words, it will have the standard 3rdgen seats in it, but they will be done in leather and it will set my car apart.

Actually 4th gen leather seats are identical to third gen GTA leather seats. The only difference is the head rest. If you can get fourth gen seats then all you have to do is get the GTA headrests. You will keep your stock appearance and get a more comfortable seat.
I have the stock 92 bird seats though, and not the GTA seats. I looked at a website today for 4thgen seats and they were up to $1000 dollars
I heard you can get good leather on your seats for $125 a piece, but I have no experience with leather.

There are different kinds of leather, for example, some leathers are simply painted, and when they wear they show the natural color of the leather. (Ever seen black seats with brown cracks?)
What I got was a leather that was impregnated with color, they use some sort of process where they vacuum the dye into the leather, so when you get wear it does not show as much.
ALSO, I got a little better quality than your typical auto leather. Auto leather is kind of stiff, but the nice stuff feels like butter, its flexible, and it is REALLY soft.

I paid $2300 for everything.
That included the front seats, back seats, door panels, the shifter bootie, map pocket, and a vinyl Dark gray colored T-top bag.
Keep in mind that you will have to pay for the pelt, and they run about $700, most pelt dealers will only sell a whole pelt, and one should do you. I have 2 colors in my interior, and the guy had the Gray leather from another project, so he gave it to me. the stitching was cheep, about $100 for everything its done by the stitch.
that's all I really know without another question.

If 4th gen seats are supposed to be identical to 3rd gen seats, then why does everyone say that they are so much more comfortable? I read so many posts on this forum and others that say there is a great difference and that they are glad they made the switch that I bought on EBAY and am having them shipped to Australia. Lumbar supports and electrics must make the difference along with the extra contouring. My seats are coming out of a 99Transam and will go into a 84Z28. Cant wait till they get here and I still believe there is a difference.

Also another difference is the 4th gen seats go back about an 1" to an 1.5" farther back than a power 3rd gen seat and about 3" farther back than a 3rd manual seat. To give you an idea I squeeze in on a manual I fit perfectly with the 4th gen seats. Perfect for anyone over 6'2"

Louie, Thanks
To everyone else wondering about the comfort level of 4th gen seats. I believe the only difference in our seat comfort and the newer seats happens to ONLY be the fact that the newer seats are newer, and they have not lost all of their support.
My 87 Firebird was more comfortable than the "GTA" Ultima seats I have now... But when I sat in a 89 GTA they were WAAAY more comfy, but the car was low miles...

I like the idea of the 4th gen seats going back that 3 extra inches more than the 3rd gen seats. I live in Australia and the car has been converted to the right-hand side. There is less room on the right-hand side in the cabin. You wouldnt realize the difference until you sit behind the wheel and you dont have a lot of room. Therefore, I welcome the seats to give me more room.

ok ditto on okfoz's comment about kinds of leather..since thats what this post was supposed to be about, but im adding my two cents on 4th gen seats anyways.
Ok first of all like you all said they are lower giving you more head room, this also puts you closer to the floor, which personally i like, it makes you feel closer to the ground, they dont have as much cushioning (sp?) but they have alot better side support, you kinda fall into them and they wrap around you, and there still just as comfortable without the cushioning. As for appearance they dont look anything alike IMO, I recall seeing any GTA seats so I dont know if those are they same, but stock firebird seats are totally different, as well as camaro..come on look at the pic! they look nothing alike, there is another type of fourth gen seat with different stitching that looks a tiny bit closer, but still nothing like 3rd gens, at any rate i love mine, and highly reccomend them over any thirdgens ....just adding my two cents

Not all 4th gen seats are the same.
The premium 4th gen pontiac seats are almost the same as the GTA seats. That's about it. Even those aren't the same. We all know about the headrests, but they aren't interchangable either. The GTA seats have 1 wide post for the head rests, and the 4th gen seats, at least the ones with the smaller head rest, use a different post.
I've also found that although they look the same, they feel quite a bit different. My GTA seats feel much fuller than my 4th gen seats. The 4th gen seats are rock hard and offer very little cushion. All of the panels *look* the same though.
