Removing rear defogger

Just what the topic says. I want to remove the defogger elements from the rear glass. Has anyone done this and/or have any tips and ideas about this. I was going to just dive right in and rip it off, but I don't want to end up with a FUBARed rear glass.

Later,
Harry

I've 'heard' before that you can rip out the lines and then scrape the rest off with a razor blade or something, but don't take my word for it, I have no firsthand experience.

Well, I suppose I'll have at it tomorrow (if it doesn't rain... it rained something like 23 out of the 31 days last month ) and tell you all how it goes. I just hope I don't mess anything up.

Why would you want to remove the rear defrost?
If it doesnt work they sell a kit to repair it other than that I would leave it alone.

i know why he doesnt want the rear defroster , probably the same reason as me. i dont drive the car in the winter, 6 months is all is gets drivem , less than 3000 miles , i want to get the window tinted and it looks better if their were no lines in it. Its a pain in the *** finding a glass in my area and to find it with out the defroster would be awesome, plus if it is possible to do it , it would give me something to do during that day .

Then I would go to a junk yard and take a razor blade with me and try it out first before I started hacking up my car.

Well, first of all... It's FUBARed. All the connections and wires are melting. Second, I virtually never use it. In the winter, when I actually drive it (I try not to), it never really makes a sizeable dent in any snow or ice back there. Third, I'll be getting tint this summer and not only will it not look good over it, but few places will do it AND guaranty that it wont peel or bubble. Fourth, and most important, I don't have the money for a new or used rear hatch without the defogger. True muscle cars don't need any "frills." Power windows? Power door locks? Seat warmers? DVD players? 1MEAN92 needs not these things.

Later,
Harry

Thanks for the offer John, but if I do decide to get another hatch, I'm sure I could find one between here and Michigan

Thanks again,
Harry

Are you sure Harry, I would not even charge you a service charge to have you drive up and trade with me

I have rear defrost, and also have my rear window tinted. I had it done back in 93 or so. And it hasn't bubbled at all, and you can barely see the defrost elements at all.

You just need to find a reputable shop to do it, I don't think I paid over $200 to have everything tinted.

It beats trying to scrape that off.

Now that I think about it, I would like to do this also. I honestly cant even picture where my defroster button is, I dont think I ever used it. (car never seen a cloudy day) But I know the strips are just glued to the window somehow. A sharp razor should work fine. If anyone tries it let me know how it comes out. Or if i end up doin it first, Ill let u all know. I think it will look alot better without the lines when tinted, and less chance for the tint guy to mess it up.

Sounds good. I'm gonna do it if I ever have a free day that it isn't raining! It seems like every day I'm off work it rains! It raining right now! WHEN WILL IT END!?!?!?! The river being muddy and above flood stage just isn't conducive to tubing down it with a case of cold ones either.
