After 11 years, I first noticed that in the 92 a few weeks back. I checked in my 86, but there is no cut in the carpet (the hook like thing is still under the carpet though).

That is to hook up your flat tire onto if you have the spare on. There is a hook that hooks onto it in your spare compartment.

Leave it to GM to make a place to hang your flat tire for that once in a blue moon event and forget to install factory cup holders for your drink that you have everyday.

The hole under the two middle vents is where a bulb socket would go. Noticed it's a little square, kinda like you would see on a turn signal or side bulbs in the taillights.

I dont have that hole that vettetrax is talking about though.

Well yeah.. you're not gonna find it. I think GM intended to put one in or something but never did. It looks like it was intended to illuminate the pod/controls/center console area. Kinda like you see on the newer mirrors. There's this tiny little light that shines down on your hand at night

I have it on my car and it works (I had to change the bulb). It illuminates the shifter and ashtray.

The same courtesy light RPO code that added lights to the DS & PS foot wells also added the ashtray l;ight under the heater vents. IF your car has lighted footwells, chances are it has the provisions for the "ashtray" light.

Unfortunately the hole GM put in the cover throws off very little light, I took a small dremel bit & made the hole larger, so it illuminates the shifter/ashtray nicely

I have the orginal owerners manuel to my car (spelling its late???) I can scan in the pic of the tire there if you want, but yea like it was said its where you put the flat tire when you are on the donut spair. If you still have the orginal spair hold down stuff that is, lol I have the owners manuel but had to buy a spair tire/wheel and jack when I bought the car LOL. So all I have is a spair, a set of lug nuts that fit the spair and a cheap scissor jack, and I have had to use it before :-( in downtown atlanta on 85 not fun for those who knows ATL.

that hole is cut differently on mine and fatJ's cars... they're U-Shaped, as opposed to a crescent-moon-shape. it makes a little more sence to me -- as it is shaped the same as the top of the bracket underneith.

Funny... My brother's '88 IROC has the footwell lights, but no ashtray light. We've even looked for it behind the dash to no avail. I'd like to make that work in my '92. I was thinking about just running it with the door switches for the interior light, although it would be really cool if it could be turned on seperately, kinda like a map light.

Later,
Harry

Isn't that "hump" there for the tranny/driveshaft?

Too funny! I never knew what that was for...all these years. Though with my subs back there I guess I can't ever use it for its intended purpose!

I always thought it was where they would hang the body of the car before it had an axel and drive train. (of course there would be no rear window or hatch at this point.)

My Hard Top 87 Van Nuys car has it whereas the T-top 87 Norwood car didn't/Doesn't When I replaced the carpet there was the loop, but no hole in the Original carpet.

My 87 Van Nuys had the hole in the carpet, and the foot/ashtray lights. I wish I had a pic of the RPO codes so I could see what else that ole baby used to have. Sadly, I only had it a year before stupidly trading it... I do remember running the VIN on this site back when I had it (a few years now), that's how I found out it was VN-made - what's strange is that I still remember haha.

I wish I'd known what the hole was for back then, but I had to put a tarp down anyway b/c the flat tire was all muddy (long story...) so I just put the tarp on top of the deck and put the tire up there.
