Auto Shift Plate For 82 Firebird

I have been looking for some time for an Auto Shift Plate for an 82 Firebird. I see on the Year one catalog that they have a shift plate for an 83 -87 Camaro. It looks very simular to what I am looking for.The only difference I can see is the one on the catalog has two D's where as mine has only one. The chances of getting a used 82 plate in good condition are very slim. Does anyone know will an 83 to 84 plate fit okay on an 82 Firebird? Why are there two D's on the newer plates. Is it possible to get 82 style plates new from an auto parts place?

One is a D and the other is a D circled, which means overdrive; which by the way wasn't available in 82.

If thats the only difference, then I don't see why the plate wouldn't work but it'll be off as far as what gear your in for 2nd and 1st. If you now have a 4 spd auto, then even better.

Check the Firebird catalog at www.classicindustries.com. I believe they have your shifter plate in there. Could be wrong...I usually skip that section...

An 83-84 Firebird plate will fit in there. The reason the 82 plate only has one D is because it has the 200c transmission instead of the 700r4 83-92 had. You can also try to find an 82 plate in the junkyards.

I think an 83 - 87 plate is the best I can get. I can't find an 82 plate that doesn't have cracks around the screw holes. I down loaded the Classic industies Catalog but can't see a shift plate for the earlier third gens. I would be nice to have an original style plate but can't find a good one. Does anyone know where else I could check for one?

Thanks for replying.

Actually, I had downloaded a different version of the catalog they have out now. I think it was last year's. I'll find it and look throught it. I looked through the one I downloaded to replace that one (I reinstalled everything on my ailing computer and it was temporarily lost) and you're right, the 82-83 shift plate isn't in there. I'll post later if I find the other catalog and the part.
