can't get my steering wheel off!!!

my grant steering wheel just came in the mail today (along with the install kit, and puller), but the bolts for the puller don't fit the holes on the wheel base. I tried a few bolts, and found that 7 mm was the closest fit (the puller came with 1/4 and 5/16 bolts), but the threads on the inside of the wheel base are stripped (looks like someone else had my problem, and destroyed the threads).

Is there any way to get the wheel off? I tried pulling, but I feel like I'm going to break something, so I didnt' pull to hard. (I already have the main bolt off the center of the wheel)

Thanks so much! this is REALLY anoying!!!

Go to autozone and rent a steering wheel puller that fits. I know I couldn't pull the steering wheel by hand.

I thought you said you already had the bolt off. It has been a while since I did mine but I just remember having to get the puller from autozone. I don't know stripped bolts suck man.
Good luck

The puller should work. If I remember they give different sized bolts. You might be able to slip one of them through and put a nut on the end and then bull it off.
Dont try it by hand. I jacked mine all up trying that. Now the whole column is loose and I have to get around to fixing it.

yea, I got the center bolt on, but the wheel is still on (and doesn't seem to want to budge).

I'll swing by AutoZone and see what they got.

Yes, the puller did come with several bolt sizes, but none of them fit, and the threads are stripped anyway

I'll see how it goes at AutoZone! thanks!

You may have to drill the holes out and re-tap them for a bigger bolt. That should work if nothing else does.

In a few cars i have used a rubber mallet to take off the old wheel with the center nut off of course
i swapped a wheel from a 87 firebird to my formula this way
and i removed the wheel on on of 84's that way as well.

well, the puller at Autozone didn't work, their bolts were just a bit to large

so I guess I'm going to have to find someone with a drill and tap :-\

d@mn, this sucks!! AAAHH!!!

and now that I'm mad as phuq, I think I'm gonna try the hammer method... only I don't have a hammer! ARRRAAH!!

Hey put the nut back on so it is just flush with the center bolt. Get a buddy and have him pull on the steering wheel while you hit the center bolt with a hammer. I have done this hundereds of times and have yet to damage the bolt.

Yup, Ive done it before too as a last resort and 9 out of 10 times itll work great. Just be careful not to damage the head bolt too bad.

You have few options
1- Use the hammer trick
2- Re Tap the holes
3- Use Transmission gear puller
4- Repalce the steering column

Good luck

I'm going to head over to my friends house in a few days, and he has a puller (maybe more luck with his) and also some hammers.

If that fails, I guess I can retap the holes.

Whats a transmission gear puller? I don't care about the old steering wheel or what happens to it. it's toar up as is. But I'd like to keep the column

Pull your seat up, put your knees behind the wheel (ensure the nut is off!) and hit it forward with your knees. Use your hands to block it from smacking you out! LOL Mine came off with VERY little persuasion. Then again, so did my ball joints, o2 sensor, LCA's...

wohoo!! Finally got it! Thanks to Chris!! (cg91ta)

This is EXACTLY the look I wanted. The pedals used to look a bit out of place (being the only bright metal inside the car), now the spokes on the wheel have the same look ;D

Here are some pictures of it installed:

I'm still in the process of figuring out what I'm gonna do witht the e-break handle.

the shifter ball was easy. take off the leather (what ever it was) and sand down the ball (take out the scratches) with progressivly finer grit, then spray it with exterior trim paint for a dull shine.

Any ideas for the e-break handle? I'll take a picture of it and post it up (if I can still find it!)

How did you reattatch the shifter ball? Mine is loose from the last time I removed it, and I want to put it back on. Thing is, I want to be able to remove it should the centre console ever need to come out.

my dash is actualy in good condition (just one small cracked area), but I put the dash cover there because the sun reflects off the dash and is quite blinding here in Phoenix.

Be careful with hammering the column, guys. The column is impact-absorbing, to keep you protected during a front-end collision. By hammering the center, you can destroy the impact-absorbing effect of the column.

my friend just tapped the center bolt with a hammer, not to hard at all really. (although I would have probably smashed it to bits, as I was quite ticked off at it )

I have a Grant wheel as well, not that style though. I really like how your interior looks.
