console swap

is it possible to swap a manual trans. 4th gen console into a manual trans. 88 iroc without doing the dashboard swap too?

If you are talking about lower console (ie: the part that has the e-brake and shifter + cup holder, coin pocket, and console glove box) then definitely. I'm not sure about the upper console that contains the cd player and climate controls. I'm sure one of the more knowledgable members will chime in with that answer.

are all 4th gen consoles pretty much the same or are some easier to put in than others?

From what I've read, they are the same as far as install goes (only a few have actually done the whole thing b/c it *IS* time intensive) and I'm sure there are cosmetic differences.

yes, you can change the console. You would have either cut apart you radio/HVAC control area or get a radio pod from the 3rdgen.

Check my site, I don't have close-up pics at this time.

You need a radio pod from a 3rg gen firebird. Camaro pod won't work as its a part of the console itself.

Wait, ANY 3rd gen firebird radio pod will work?
I thought only the 87+ pods worked? If not, cool!

Hey

I am going to add the question here as well and bring it ttt..

I may have a chance to get a full 98 Formula interior, that would include the leather seats and console.

After doing many many searches I came to the realization that cutting up my Camaro radio/climate control area so it would fit the 98 console just won't look the way I would like...

So my question is, seeing that I have the 87 IROC, can I get say a Radio/Climate Control Pod out of '90 Formula and put it in my car (which would then make the 98 console look a lot better)

Will it be as simple as bolt in the radio/climate pod from the '90, drop in my climate control piece (which doesn't have AC) and my radio (I have a 1 DIN aftermarket stereo in my Camaro now with an adapter plate). Then put in the console??

Can this be done?

Yes this can be done, that is the setup I have in mine 87. Use the 90 formula radio pod behind the radio pod face plate is a bracket that you will be using to attached the radio pod to your 87 dash. then once the radio pod is installed you would then install the console. I did not screw the console and radio pod together you can if you want, but i didn't see the need for it. I used a black piece of plastic to fill the gap between the radio pod and the 87 dash. Once you install the radio pod you'll see a 1" gap, but the black plastic fixs it. In my website is a pic of the job completed. email me if you have any questions. this is a doable job...

bluepastu?

I checked out your Cardomain site.... very site looking car you have there....You interior is how I envision mine after the swap. If you had some close up shots of the radio pod/console it would be appreciated.... if you could email them to me that would be perfect!!

If you have MSN feel free to add me as a contact, or just email at:

stan_hines@hotmail.com

Thanks man!! I knew that it was "do-able" , I just needed to find someone who had done it before to give me some pointers.

sorry, but I don't have any closeup pics just yet... but i can guide you throu the install process. Once you line up the radio pod and 4thgen console you'll see that everything will fit into place. Let me know if there are any questions, I'd be glad to help!

Thanks for the comps on my ride. I'm dealing with "wheel hop" issues and the moment. Other then that it's a fun ride. I have a couple vetts before hand and wanted to do something different and wanted a convertible, so this was it.

You can check a guy on here that I know in VA, his name on here is Zepher, he's swapped just about the entire 4th gen interior into his 86 TA. Here is his website where he has pics up of the swap... although I'm not sure if it's done yet...

I believe the older 4th gen consoles are shorter and won't fit correctly. I thought it was like 96+ or somthing like that. Anyway, my console is from a 2000ss manual, I just hacked up my old console and kept the 91 camaro rs radio pod, it looks ok, but could use a little cleaning up still.

Do you have any pics of this "hacked up Camaro" console??? I have a spare old console which I might experiment on and I am getting a Firebird console for cheap.... I have all winter to figure out which one looks better I guess

I would like to see pics and here peoples preferences though!!

You can kind of see what I did, although I cut off more than I needed to and it doesn't look so great. That top piece doesn't go down all the way because the console is lower and hits part of the shifter that should be fixed when I get a little grove for it though, I still need the boot, and I still need to put the peice back over the radion and HAVC.

ok...

This is encouraging.... so does the shifter move all the way through the travel? P-R-N-D-2-1 ??? No probs there?

And how much cutting to make the top piece fit flush?? I have a Dremel with lots of bits so I guess it shouldn't be too hard...

Maybe I will use the Camaro console.... I have all winter lol....

Yeah, just makes it into 1st. THere isn't that much cutting, I would think a dremel would be fine, I used a hacksaw. Just remember, its better to go back and cut more off than cut too much off the first time, I didn't. Look around, there are pictures of much cleaner installs around here, actually I have a picture of one somehwere let me try and find it.

Nice!!!!

A side shot of that would be awesome... I see that who ever did that job installed the hatch switch on the console and I am assuming the power window switches in that little covered compartment thingy??....

Thanks the thread I made when I did my swap. His pictures are in there, you can see where I cut too much off and could have done a cleaner job.

Maybie that has alot to do with it but he also did a much cleaner job. I'm not a fan of that blue or the shifter he used. I was thinking about trying to carpet my radio pod and console so it looked like it was all one piece but I don't know how well it would come out.

now im confused, it seems like some people say it goes right in, and others say they had to make it fit (without and detail). this is the first post iv'e seen with an auto trans and accual pictures of what didn't fit. what i want to know is, will my manual trans, 87 Formula, fit a console from a 4th gen f-body? preferably firebirf? without modifiying it. is it a direct bolt up?

I'm I think the manual console should just bolt right in, and its just us camaro people who have to deal with the radio pod, but your radio pod is a seperate part correct? The most custome work I think you would need is to cut 2 plastic tabs off the 4th gen console.

The 93-96 firebird or t/a, and 97-02 camaro consoles are a direct bolt in (except for power window and mirror switches) for 85-92 Firebirds.
and can be fabricated into 82-84 firebirds and all 3rdgen camaro's
I will be putting one in the IROC and will take plenty of pics when done

This doesnt have to do directly with the console swap but it has to do with it somewhat. Ok I have a 84 maro and my auto shifter is crap i dont like the little leather ball shifter and i cant put another handle on it, pluse the wite tab broke a little so now i have no handle. My first question is: Can i also install a 4thgen camaro shifter out of tha same car? 2nd: Will it bolt up and i wont have to fab something to make the shifter plate fit it right? Anbd 3rd: Why hasnt anyone thought of wiring in one of the 4thgen push button poppers for the hatch? I think i might do that.

Hope you don't mind that I took the liberty to post these for ya Blue!

Is it the pic or does that shifter boot look way to big???

A few up close shots of the top of the 3rd gen Firebird radio/climate pod where it meets the Camaro dash would be great!! I am wondering if there will be a gap there because the "birds" have a piece over that area with the switches....

That is my console swap. It was only a temporary set-up. Now the car has a radio pod i made from wood, no pics of it though. Here is a link to some more pics of the swap.
