Installing locking floor storage COVER in car not orig equiped

Well fellas, I used to own an 86 Z and I really liked the locking cover setup. My iroc was not equiped with one and does not have those studs. So I was wondering rather than having to fab up brackets and what not, could I just drill some holes and use bolts to hold it down to the body? How much clearance is there between the body and the gas tank back there? Would it be worth it to make up some brackets and go through the hassle of welding them and everything? ANy ideas would be appreciated. My friend is donating a mint bose rear cover and I really wanna get it installed asap

Thanks guys

Will

I've worked with Dave for an overhead T-top console and his customer service was great! Looks like he has the parts to do what you need on his site too as long as your interior color matches...

I already have both pieces, My question is how to I get the cover, the one that swings up and down, to bolt to the body of the car??? I havae the lock mechanism and all that crap, just need ideas on how to secure the cover itself to the body of the car.

I believe GM still sells the bracket(s) (which has a bolt coming through it and which were spot welded to the car itself) I think I still have the hardware--nuts and covering cap somewhere.

I have done this conversion. You will need the brackets from the (or a) doner car. The brackets are only spot welded to the body and a spot weld remover must be used to remove them. MAC TOOLS makes a nice one that does not drill a pilot hole through the body. The two hinge brackets are spot welded to the body near the fule tank hump, and the latch bracket is spot welded near tail lights. I took careful measurements and had the brackets tacked in place with a MIG welder in place and installed everything to test the fit. It it was OK so we finished welding them in place. The rearmost trim piece must also be changed to accomodate the locking floor.

I suggest you get these brackets, etc. from the car the panel came from.

Hate to sound overly simple, but just use some self taping screws and call it a day, nothing complex. Worked fine for me.

What good is a locking compartment, if all you have to do to break into is unscrew a few screws?

Umm, have you ever looked at one of these?

The screws would be inside the compartment when it is closed. Just as the stock bolt heads would be. No difference.

No, I haven't looked at one. I have been thinking of getting one. Now I know you don't really need to use the brackets, thanks.
