TTop Shades - Who has em?

I'm looking at getting some ttop shades for my car. Are they interchangeable between sides? Somebody has a set they'll sell me, but they are both for the drivers' side. If anybody has these, can you tell me if they will work on either side. Thanks.

I have them and I pretty sure you can't swap them. If I am wrong someone correct me. Mine are crap right now. One is split in half and both the fabrick has pulled away.

I heard they specify the side they are to go on. Are you 100% positive they are? If so, then I'll buy the set.

mine are the same.....

and are not labeled.... but are factory

so i would say that they are the same, and go ahead and buy them, can you ask the guy if you can make sure that they fit before you get them from him ??

then you can be 120% positive

If it helps any, I can tell you that they were interchangable on my 2001 TA and were not designated as "left" or "right"

um... just wondering why you would want t-top shades if they're already tinted...?

Since I don't own a trailer anymore, my car will be driven to car shows. That being said, the AC unit works twice as hard with the sun coming in all the glass. Think about the amount of glass on these cars. The windshield, ttops and rear hatch. While driving to SuperFest last year, my AC was on full during the hottest part of the day. With a set these, the heat also won't damage the interior when the car sits at a show.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I'll go ahead and get 'em.

My car origninally came with those but I did not get them when I bought it. I made my own, and they work great. Bought some heavy cardboard from a local upholstery place and cut them to fit on top of my headliner, they look different than the factory ones, but they work well... I also painted to top of them silver to reflect more light and it helped TONS in the heat department.. I have BLACK interior...

They should be pretty easy to make. I am going to use abs, and cover it with sweat shirt material. Then i might sew some GTA patches on them Of course i will wake up by then and probably just buy a set

OK, I got the shades today. They are different for each side. These are manufactured by CoverCraft and are marked OEM on the box. The liner material is an exact match to the headliner material. The passenger side fit in perfectly, but the drivers' side, not so much. I will double check it tomorrow as I couldn't open the car door and be out of the car at the same time (garage issues). If anybody needs brand new, NOS, grey passenger side sunshades, let me know. $10/ea. + shipping.

The A/C unit will work the same if the car has absolute 0 glass.
If you are hard up for one.. make it out of cardboard and paint it black (assuming you'll take it out at the show anyways). It doesn't take an engineering degree to make one.

I'm not sure how to read your post. Of course the AC works harder with all the glass. For the car to stay cooler, the AC fan needs to be run at higher speeds for longer durations. If the car had no glass, it would be considerably cooler to start with. Why do you think people tint the windows? Other than looks, it helps keep the interior cooler by blocking out the sun and heat.

As for the shows, I usually leave my windows up and ttops in. This keeps people out of my car, keeps flyers out of my car and keeps dirt and dust out of my car.

The cardboard option might be fine for some, but not for me. They need to look correct or they won't be installed. I take too much pride in my car to install a hack job.

If the A/C is on, it's on. It doesn't vary how hard it works based on interior temp. There is no thermostat on the inside of the car for the heating system to even know what temp to maintain. It switches on and off in regards to A/C line pressure. I'm not sure what you meant about the a/c fan, but if your talking about the radiator fan it kicks on as soon as you switch the a/c on. If you have the dual setup, it kicks the secondary on. If it didn't do this, the pressure would get to high, blow the safety valve on the back of the compressor, and release all your refrigerant and oil to atmosphere.

Also, it seems to me that OKFOZ was trying to help you out, and he even took the time to post up diagrams for you. Whats the need to call his solution a hack job?

I wasn't criticizing okfoz's method. I was trying to interpret what deadbird was saying. He said to make it out of cardboard and paint it black. That's a hack job. Isn't anybody following the flow of this thread?

As for the AC, you guys amaze me. Doesn't anybody realize that it takes longer to cool off a hot environment than one that is already many degrees cooler to start with? You don't need a PhD to understand that it takes longer to cool a 120 degree interior than it does one at 95*. How many people turn the AC on full blast when the car is really hot? If it wasn't as hot, then you wouldn't need to run full blast for so long. I need to find where you guys are getting your education so I can make sure my son goes elsewhere!

In regards to the AC fan, do you guys only have one setting? I have low speed to high speed with speeds in between. Another word for the fan is the blower. Understand, or do I need to post pics?

scottmoyer and deadbird, I think I know what you're both talking about.

What scottmoyer is saying is when it's hot, and without the shades, the A/c works harder/takes longer for the car to cool down. What deadbird is saying is that the A/C doesn't "work harder" when it's hotter, it works at the same rate all the time.

The best way to put it/say it is that the hotter it is, the harder it is FOR the A/C to cool down the car... not the harder the A/C works..... you guys understand what I'm trying to say? lol, at least I think that's what you 2 are confused on....

I missed the cardboard part of okfoz' but, that's the cardboard I was talking about. I guess I should have been specific so as not to confuse you. I didn't mean go find and old corrugated Sony tv box and slap it up there.

You're not turning the A/C on full blast... your turning the blower on full blast. The A/C system will cycle roughly the same weather the blower is going full force or not at all which is what I was talking about.
I need to find where you guys are getting your education so I can make sure my son gets a better one!
You also need to find a different attitude. I wasn't trying to be an a-- to you so why to you feel the need to be one ?

Stating that I might be hardup for something and also saying that I don't need to be educated to make something is where I got my attitude. I'm not hard up for these shades, and I think I can figure out how to cover up the open areas.

Isn't the blower assembly part of the HVAC system? Without the blower, the car won't cool down at all. So when I use a generic term like the AC unit, I'm referring to the entire AC system. That's pretty much a given, unless you're trying to be technical, which again can bring on an attitude.

Nobody on these boards is 100% correct in all the terminology they use. They make reference to things that is known to everyone else without getting completely technical. I highly doubt that you are that accurate in all that you say. Again, that's where the attitude comes from!:hail:

Everything I said in my above post was 100% correct, how does that make me poorly educated? I have also read quite a bit of deadbirds posts, and seen his site. I don't know his backround, but I can tell you that he is a very knowledgable person as well. I also agree with deadbird on this issue: Lighten up

If your going to start insulting my knowledge, check out my website. I take great pride in what I know and what I am able to do, and it doesn't sit right having someone insult me because I corrected them.

Also, I have never heard a blower motor being referred to as an "A/C fan". Had I known what the hell you were talking about, that part of my post wouldn't have been nessesary, now would it?

I simply said if you are hard up for one (a shade)... make it yourself.. it takes no skill to make (thus the engineering comment). You took it out of context yourself.
No one said it has to stay there or be permanent. It could be a temp shade untill you find something.
Sorry you misunderstood my general comments just as I did yours. The end

Alrighty then. I have deleted selected posts out of this thread. If that offends you, sorry.

I have been watching this thread since it started. It has been reported to me more than once. This thread has some useful info in it, so I will not delete the whole thing. I will not even lock it.......yet.

Keep it tech-related and stop the fighting (whining) or I will just delete it all.

I am not trying to be an a$$ or anything, but we are all adults here. Questions?

We're back to this point again, oh well. Back to the thread.

There must be different kinds of shades available during the production of our cars. The boxes I have say OEM Pontiac, but they also say CoverCraft, so....

This is the reason this set doesn't work. The shade looks rectangular, but is actually skewed a few degrees. Here's what they look like in my car. You can see the variance.
