convertible question

i see pictures of convertibles, and i always wonder what this piece is for. can it be removed? what would it look like without that piece there? if that piece were not there, could you install a normal spoiler without any further modification? does anyone have any pictures without this piece?

That piece is there to cover the area that was removed to take off the roof and hatch area from the t-top cars the verts were built from.
IMHO a rather ingenious way to hide the butchery.
My car...1988 IROC convertible

I can take some of my 91 Vert with it off. I have it off to flosh the tops for when I put my 92Z wing on it.

If you or some one you know is skilled enough.. remove it.. and replace it with sheet metal instead.. make it nice and smooth.. as if it was always like that..

well that's the reason i'm asking what it looks like underneath. since i don't have a vert yet, i've never seen it. my plan would be to remove that and weld it smooth, but i don't know if that piece some other function and if underneath could be welded. has anyone ever done that?

Well looking at it, I would say that if you removed it.. you would find a hole .. so I would say ya, if you pull it off and prep the metal.. you could weld in a plug, and shape it. I do not know of anyone that has done that.

You can barely see the cut edge towards the door.

It looks so much better with it on the car.

thanks, that helps a lot. so the trunk lid sits higher than the quarter panel comes up. is that the only reason for that piece? if so, you could weld in a piece to go as high as the trunk lid right? either way, that will probably make it a pain in the *** to install hawks 5" spoiler

It would be cool if some company made a fixed roof hardtop in the same shape as the vert (kinda like a Z06 has a hardtop similar to the C5 vert).

Just a thought......

I think he means a removeable hard top that would work instead of the soft convertible. Not on a standard hatch camaro of T/a

A removeable hard top would be cool, but not on my car!
