Custom makeing CenterCaps (87-older IROC-Z wheels)?????

I was thinking about it and instead of paying about 100bucks canadian for a new set i was thinking of making a set. Or getting a set made.
Problem is i only have acces to a circle cutter that leaves a hole in the center of the alum i want to use. I was thinking of getting vinal skickers to cover the little hole left and get IROC-Z letters on em. What do you guys think...i have yet to think of a good idea to hold em on really good. any ideas???? I have a few but none are good for easy removal and plus keeping them in there nice and tight.

I was talk'n about these ones:

http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/in...il?v=1&pid=827

Although I think Hawks lists the wrong years, 'cuz I know they came on the v6's from 91-92.

Those were base model wheels on the 91-92s and they were Z28 wheels on the years they have listed. So if you were looking for Z28 wheels they are listed correctly. They just don't have all the applications listed.

This is the style of rim jcurrieirocz is talking about, of course this is an 88-90 iroc rim and not a 85-87 but the inserts are the same. I just added inserts to my things to make list.

You won't like it with just the vinyl. Trust me.

You need to find someone with a "doming" kit. they can put that bubble over the vinyl. That's what makes it look professional. I had a guy who used to do it, and he made center caps all the time. He doesn't do it anymore.

Mathius- thanks anyway, but yah those rims arent (87-older) Iroc wheels. Those are just z28 wheels not the same.

85SportCoupeto89RS- I thought the centercaps werent interchagable from the double line and the single line iroc wheels,,,am i wrong???
You do know that each centercap is made up of two parts a black plastic part and a metal(in my case) insert with iroc-z on it. Are you talking just about just the metal insert part and not the plastic part or do you mean the whole centercap??

Abubaca- Thanks for your idea, I know i could prob use two part apoxy and make a thick bubble type layer. But no thanks that just looks "normal" to me. And yes i will like the vinal. Heres my plan......

I'll use a black vinal circle and chrome vinal IROC-Z letters and stick that right onto the centercap or ill paint the alum cap black then put the chrome letters on it.

Anyone have an idea of how to hold the alum circle plates to the rim holes????
(keep in mind on the front the hubgrease cap sticks out soo much i may have clearance problems with some ideas)

If you have acces to a drill press you can use your hole saw. Take out the drill bit in the center and camp the piece that you are cutting real good. It took me a few tries too make nice centers. I used 1/8" aluminum plate. Would not recommend anything hard than the aluminum because the saww will want to wander alot. Sorry no close up shots. I polished the centers too match the wheels

oh yeah! I just used silicon to stick the centers on, but be removable when I needed to take them off. I had no problems with them flying off. Used really good silicon, 3m I believe.

launchpad- Right on,,, i was thinking of that but wasnt sure if it would be ok to do buy claming it down.....So im assuming there is a hole saw the exact size of our caps?? Maybe ill polish my alum caps and then put black vinal letters of IROC-Z on there right on!! What color silicon was it,,,do you know what axact name is from 3M. I guess if i silicon them on i can make a few extra for spares just incase i lose a few.

Oh yah are those fully polished iroc wheels?? Did you do them yourself. We were all just asking about that here, and i didnt know anyone with compleatly polished iroc wheels:

I think any good silicon will work. Can't remember the exact name of the stuff I used. the aluminum center caps are really light and I've had my car's speedo rapped around and the caps never flew off.
The wheels are polished by myself. You can see the recesses were the lugs go and where the "FRONT" and "Back" in raised lettering on the spokes are not polished. I hope to finish these areas this winter.
I wish I saw this site before I polished my wheels. It took a lot of trial and error and many hours.
I left my centers plain for now but I'm thinking of taking them to a lasar or water cutter shop to get something engraved on them. The decals are a excellent Idea too. Let me know how they turn out.

Also when using the drill press to make the caps you have to "peck" with the cutter to get it to start and continue in the right place. Once it is going through just use continuous pressure.
Be Carefull!!!! A sheet of aluminum spinning around in the drill press would probably slice a person in half. Sorry to sound like a mother!!!!
Nic to hear from a fellow Canadian on this site!!!

Yep, I used the saw size for what I wanted for a disk. Then used a file to smooth the side and edges.
Just remeber that the size of the cutter means what size A hole would be if cut by the cutter, not the disk size.
The silcon was clear. You won't be able to see it though, just put the silicon on the back of the disk. Make sure the surfaces are really clean and rough them up so it gets some bite.

Something like that? I also used 1/8" aluminum with a hole saw. If I didn't have a press to use, my plan was to get a carriage bolts with the flat round head and polish it. Then stick it in the hole. I used aluminum epoxy to fasten the centers in place. When I need to take them out for tire mount/balance, a swift knock with a brass drift and hammer and it will pop right out.

By the way, good choice on the color

Here's a shot of them on the car. Sorry about the wavyness of the pic, I compressed it down, but got the aspect ratio off slightly.

I think the caps made a huge improvement for about 2 hours worth of time.
