I'm getting tired of searching for good condition black plastic parts that won't cost a fortune.

Is there a special paint that will adhere to plastic that won't peel off in 6 months?

It doesn't have to look 100%, just acceptable.

 

I have seen people use that plastic spray paint, and some dye stuff but none really last and durable enough to put in high contact areas. I have some stuff that I picked up from a local paint store that is a flex agent and you spray it on after you clean it really good to promote sticking on bare plastics. Don’t know how well it would work on interior parts with something like spray paint over it.. I was thinking about however testing out some gloss black automotive paint with that agent after I sand down my plastic panels really smooth and see how long they last. got to love having a donor car with parts you can experiment with.

 

Marhyde makes good interior dye in spray cans. Costs $8-$10 per can and you need 2-3 cans probably minimum for a full color change. I did this back in '93 for a friend's '71 Chevelle that had a pea green interior that went to black. I just saw the car again last summer at the car cruise and it still looked great! He said he only has had to touch up the kick panels, and even then he said they weren't showing green, only a little nicked up.

I used it on my motorcycle seat too and never had any fading or color bleeding in the 3 years I had it.

 

krylon fusion works wonders.

done most of my interior plastic w/ it. all the black.

works great done my whole atv w/ it too.

it wont flake off or nothin. only way it came off my atv was it got rolled and scratched off.

n some kids climbin cross back w/ rough shoes scratched it as well.


i have pics of stuff i painted on my site but only good one was of the top door panel cover that has the window sweep on it.

i also done my whole consoule w/ it and trim around the windows.

 

my one friend has his all in Silver.. looks great.. he said he cleaned them very well.. and used plastic coat plaint....

 

You know guys.. when it comes to a rattle can and a piece of plastic I would say I have more experience than even I want....

If your trying to keep the textured look the plastic already has then you will need to clean with a plastic prep (MAKE SURE YOU WEAR RUBBER GLOVES) the oils from your hands will not let the paint stick. Then use an adheson promoter...

If you are going to sand plastic IT MUST BE WET SANDED for minimal scratching After you sand (again wearing rubber gloves) wash with a mild soap and water (liguid dish soap works fine) make sure to wash all soap off, dry and paint. If using a gloss finish. Sand again using a finer grit (like 2000) till you have an even finish. Repeat process until solid color with even finish. Yes it will look dull but thats ok. Use rubbing compound to remove fine scratches clean then a Clear Coat That will bring the shine out.

I will get some pictures for you guys next week my TA that I have sanded and painted the trim is having the tranny rebuilt.

 

I tried the Krylon Fuscion for plastic this weekend. It worked great. I took out the panels I wanted to be painted, removed the carpet and insulation on the back. Then I washed the panels really well with dish soap and a brillo pad. I dried it and then cleaned all surfaces to be painted with rubbing alcohol. It worked great for me. It does take some time before it cures, but once done I'm sure my effort will be rewarded. It looks SHARP! My father in law, who is an upholsterer, helped me recarpet the panels with new black carpet.... Sooooo nice!

I'll get some pics later, after I do a little touch up and they cure.

 

Go for Krylon Fusion. I used some on some plastic for my car. It makes it about as close to original as you can get and still have some durability. It is sort of semi-gloss kind of like how the plastics appeared in the first place.

 

man guys my krylon was really glossy black looked great and dried in less then 10 mins 2.

i done no prep what so ever either lol.

i had son of a gun on my plastic and just sprayed right over it.

nothin had any probs except for my consoule it orange peeled badly.

and i was expermenting w/ red and had take it off so i used coleman lattern fuel stuff took the paint right off and washed em but still oranged badly .

i read tho only prepsol the stuff they use to wipe car off to remove grease and wax before painting is only thing that will remove some thing in the armor all stuff that water and thinner wont take off and makes paint orange peel badly.

but like i said rest had no probs but id recommend washing them off n stuff 1st or prepsol if u can find some and that give best results.

 

Is Krylon Fusion avalible in stock GM interior colors? I have one small plastic part I can't find for my GTA in the correct color so my only option might be to have one painted to match. I have a 1989 GTA with the medioum beechwood (RPO 66) interior.

 

Dunno - Best bet I could see is to check their website.

 

I only recommend Krylon Fusion in black. I couldn't find a match for the grey.

 

Looked at their web site and the choice is very limited to what actually match a 3rdgen interior color.

 

u could paint it in krylon fusion then paint over fusion w/ a matching color even one mixed fomr auto paint in spray can or something because the red pepper fusion was way to red!!!!

i mean orange lol.

so i used some paint over it that matched my dads s10 we had mixed at auto body supply place to match his factory exterior color.

painted over my orange fusion consoule sides w/ it. ive beat and banged round on it gettin in and out and workin on the inside hasnt chipped or anything.

What about painting headliner, carpet and seats too? (all the interior). It's possible with some product? (paint for shoes or similar, etc....).

i had some sema coating i think it was called?

from auto body supply store was flexible coating said good for carpet vinyl all that sorta stuff used it on my old torn up shift boot on the kinda carpet side and the leather side worked fine.

most paints will make carpet hard but that coating didnt seem to.

i also had some expereince w/ normal paint and krylon fusion on vinyl doesnt work at all.

it will cover but stays sticky for like ever and dulls quicky and sticks to ya n stuff like i said.

havent tried that felxible coating on it tho might work worked great on what i used it for.

 

Update. After a week, I went back, as the directions recommended and recoated them.

They now have a nice, glossy, deep black color to them. They look AWESOME!

 

lets see how that plastic looks.

 

another vote for Fusion...only thing is make sure you allow it to cure properly and in the right temp. I did my arm rests on the doors when it was about 40degrees outside and I let it dry for about a week. It never curred correctly and it's rather sticky. I'd go with black too, passengers are asses when it comes to getting their grubby hands all over your freshly white painted interior.

 

As soon as my parents get back from their vacation, I'll take a pic with the digital camara. My only regret is that I didn't take "before" pics.

I'm going to swap in a 4th gen dash, I really want the eBony (black) but they are expensive and getting hard to find. I'm thing of just buying a grey dash & painting it.

got new ones scanned and on flopies and cd but damned if they wont fuly open thumbnail view but not full open pc locks up

kyrlon plasic paint. That stuff rocks. I'll be using that for the blue touches on my interior when I get the time and money.
