4th gen gauges

Hey, finally about to bolt up my '99 camaro dash, but I have a question first. I just bought a gauge cluster out of a 97 z28. It's cool, it's got that white overlay with the flames and stuff...ANYWAY, All I need now is the harness that plugs into the cluster. Question is, do I need the harness from a '97 car or will other years, or even a trans am harness work? I'm only looking for the harness with a little wire left to it. I don't want the whole harness. Just need to splice it in.

Any help would be appreciated. Called all the local yards, and none have a '97 z28 or any of the harness from one.

I'm not sure about harness compatability, but it took me awhile to find just the harness for my 95 z28 gauges. Nobody wants to chop it up, but just sell it as whole.

Check out the boards at camaroz28.com, theres lots of 4th gen people over there, and its where I found my harness.

Youll need the 97 harness i believe. I did the full swap of a 98z into my 90 about a yr, yr and a half ago myself.

You can use other newer yrs, but get a harness diagram to make sure the colors are the same.....or since you dont have one at all then youll know which pinout is for what

Im not sure to be honest. As ive never really taken apart say a v6, firebird, ta etc 4th gen dashes, but id think theyd all be the same. as in smae number of wires coming off the plug......

I will be useing a 95 v6 firebird harness for my 2002 firebird v8 guages. The wires from my 95 harness also match up to the wires that I think it was CustomX posted for his 98 camaro guages about a year ago.

Are the '97 camaro guages like the 98-02 guages in appearance? If so then I am almost sure that you can use any year firebird harness or 98-02 camaro harness for the guage cluster. Any of those should just plug right in. You may just need to just change some wires around in the plug.

alright, what I'm gonna do is just go out and get any harness I can find, then I'll draw a little picture of the harness with a chart of all the wires comming out of it, and if you could, just confirm that they match yours? Just want to make sure that when I wire up according to the wiring color chart diagram things that they're actually going to the right things and not just the right wires, know what I mean?

1999-2002 F-bodies switched to a 240-40 ohm fuel gauge instead of the 0-90 ohm ones used in ours. How do you plan to get around that?

you're not talking to me, right? I'm using a 97 cluster. Speaking of which, I'm gonna need a Dakota digital box thing (can't remembe the name right now) for what? The tach or speedo? Or am I gonna need one for each?

Nevermind...Just saw that John5.7 is using the later gauges

you will need the SGI-8 box for your tach.. nothing for your speedo.. it wants the 4000 ppm and you have that in the 91 already.. the tach is wanting 4 cyl pulse and you will be feeding it a 8 cyl pulse so you will read about 50 to 75 percent high.

That's awesome about the speedo. However, the 4cyl tach thing, I thought that was jus for he LS1 gauges? I have '97 Z28 gauges, in 97 it was an LT1. I'm assuming I still need it anyways, just wondering.

my bad.. that is right.. it is for the ls1.. yours as long as it is from an lt1 you should not need the box at all...

I am going with an Autometer guage in my air vent. But there is a way to remove the 240 ohm guage and replace it with a 0-90ohm in the cluster.

yes.. the fuel gauge can be replaced by a 3rd gen gauge so it will work.. im useing the 98 cluster but it is v6 so it will work without it.. but the ls1 you have to change it.. just get one out of an older car with the same sweep. you will be good then.

Its been a long time since I read the article I saw it in and I can't find it right now, but is it as easy as pulling the old one out and puting the 3rdgen one in? Or is there more to it? because I think I remember it saying that theres some kind of soldering to the board involved.
