Re: Window motor install.......THE EASY WAY....the tech article is bogus!
I have no idea why people are calling this a hack. I just replaced my worn out motors in less than 45 minutes, both sides. I used a harbor freight step drill. verified where the rivets where and knocked them out with a hammer and pin punch. It is absolutely pertinent to put a screwdriver into the from hole and in between the scissor lift in the center of the door to prevent the window from falling. The hardest part was getting the mounting screws back on.
Re: Window motor install.......THE EASY WAY....the tech article is bogus!
Thanks to the OP - saved a ton of time swapping out my motors this weekend. I welded the nuts on the back of the window motor which made it even easier.
FYI, I also repaired my power locks by cleaning all the gunk out of my door latches. Locks working nice and strong now.
Re: Window motor install.......THE EASY WAY....the tech article is bogus!
Does anyone know what size bolts are best for the bracket or regulator as some call it? Previous owner drilled 3 of the 4 rivets I guess to be able to drill out the motor rivets and I just want to screw it in place. Thanks! I put 3 random screws just to save the hole alignment
Re: Window motor install.......THE EASY WAY....the tech article is bogus!
Just wanted to say- I think this thread should be a sticky. This is exactly how I swapped my window motors, had it done in about 30 minutes, no sweat.
Anyone saying it shouldn't be done this way is silly. They probably went through all the work of doing it by the books and had lots of trouble. There's a hundred holes on the inside of the door, 3 more is nothing. Glad I found this thread before I went that path.
Re: Window motor install.......THE EASY WAY....the tech article is bogus!
Been a while since a recent post on here, but I just did this... I'm waiting on my new motors to come in but I got a head start and drilled the holes and drilled the rivets out. Ive been looking at this post since 2004 and finally decided to replace my slow motors...the passenger side was going out and since im doing boy work and had the door panels off.......nows the chance....
a couple take aways.
1. use sharp bits or you will be waiting forever for the bit to cut the rivet
1.1 Flipping the template over dies NOT line it up that well...but a little intuition and looking at the rivet location hels avoid drilling multiple holes in your door
2. My glass was out so the spring tension was great
3. be sure to "lock" the regulator assembly so that it doesn't fly up and do something stupid like...lets say hit you in the cheek 1.5 inches below your eye and thus causing your face to swell up and make it hard to see as you drill out the driver side....with that oddly specific scenario out of the way...
4, If GM had just used nuts and bolts like every other car manufacturer things would be much easier....but this method REALLY helps... granted I have my glass out so technically removing the regulator would be easy but.......
